Module 02 Introduction to APT
In Module 02; we’ll explore the history of APT, or Automatically Programmed Tool, and understand why it’s essential to know this language when working with Cutter Location Files, often called CL Files. You’ll learn about the structure of Post Processor statements, how they’re used in DELMIA by the NC Programmer, and how they’re interpreted by the post processor. We’ll also take a closer look at the syntax of APT commands, and discover where these syntax definitions are stored and accessed
Module 01 Post Processing

How to create a part list and matching balloons in xHighlight in less than 1 minute?
Part lists and matching balloons are frequently used to count components and build purchase lists. This video below walks you through all these simple steps in less than 1 minute. Select desired components. Toggle on their part list properties together. Adjust height and text alignments as needed. Insert metadata columns as needed. Insert balloons with one click. Pick desired balloon placements. Publish technical illustrations. Check a vector image in attached zip.
How to select multiple parts quickly in xHighlight?
In xHighlight sometimes we need to select multiple parts together, to assign materials, transform, explode and so on, instead of dealing with one at a time. Multiple selections save lots of time when there are many instances to go through the same handling. E.g. the 7 screws shown below. I can ctrl click all 7 to select them all, but it's pretty tedious and time consuming. This video below compares single clicks and a box selection on the Assembly panel. The box selection is a huge time

[📺 xHighlight App Learning Series | Ep.2] – Import your CAD model (to create a 3D product presentation)
Once you are finished with your product design, you simply drop your model into xHighlight by clicking “INSERT PRODUCT” in the action bar of the app. If you have designed your product outside the 3DEXPERIENCE platform, for example in Solidworks, you would need to import the CAD data via Solidworks Connector. Here is the how-to video: 💡 Tip: If your product is very complex, it’s recommended to optimize and simplify the engineering data first and create a reduced model version. Watch the
Translate, rotate, and scale components in 3DEXCITE Product Communicator xStudio
@Emna Sellami raised a good question about moving parts around in xStudio. I guess the discoverability issue may arise from several factors: Remember to double click a part to select it. Single-click selects the entire assembly, rather than the target part. Once a part is selected, please look for a small triad which is an in-context manipulator, sometimes at a corner, as shown below. This small manipulator integrates lots of controls to move, rotate, and scale parts. The arrows translate a
Selection made easier in xHighlight
A head-scratcher here. Often times, there are many instances of similar parts that we need to select before controlling them precisely, such as assign materials, move, hide and so on. It'd be tedious, time-consuming, and error prone to manually pick them all, such as all the screws on this speaker, or all the side panels. I mean, locate, click on all of the 6, or 10 or even dozens of them, without accidentally losing previously selected objects? Come on😅 That's why it's pretty sweet to see
How to create Augmented Reality (AR) displays from Product Communicator?
As shown in a SOLIDWOROKS champions demo, you can easily create Augmented Reality (AR) displays from xStudio or xHighlight in Product Communicator. Export a glb from xStudio or xHighlight. Open this glb on your phone with a mobile glTF Viewer, such as this one by the Khronos Group. On the App, switch to the AR tab and scan a flat surface, such as the chessboard. Now your favorite digital chess piece is in the physical space.
Bring models to the 3DEXPERIENCE platform
Great post here by @Miguel Angel Cruz Aguirre To the question about bringing models to the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform, here are several ways to reuse them in xStudio or any other Apps: Use 3DEXPERIENCE SOLIDWORKS Premium on the tenant to save files to the platform. Once data is on the platform (Collaborative Space, specifically), it can be used across other Apps. Or install Collaborative Designer for SOLIDWORKS, a small addin to your desktop SOLIDWORKS, to save files to the platform. Or
Product Communicator, SOLIDWORKS Visualize and SOLIDWORKS Composer
One question comes up often about the differences between Product Communicator, SOLIDWORKS Visualize and SOLIDWORKS Composer. I thought this chart would cover the gist. In short, both SOLIDWORKS Visualize and SOLIDWORKS Composer are super powerful on your local computers. Go for them! Share your awesome creations, here and on social media, as you may have seen in lots of posts🌟 If you and your broader teams would like quick and easy ways for renderings, glTF, 360-degree turntable sequences, 3D
glTF is Engaging🤩
Let's continue a prior topic of a simple acronym "FUSE" to describe glTF. The first three letters are: F for Fast, U for Universal, S for Simple. The acronym concludes at E, meaning Engaging. Of course every glTF is 3D, which invites the audience to interact, to explore, to enjoy the freedom, and to be in control. It's assisting a bidirectional dialog, beyond the traditional way of passive information dump. In addition, look at the visual quality! The helmet feels so life-like, realistic
glTF is Universal♾️
Now that 3DEXPERIENCE World 2024 has concluded, let's resume a prior topic of a simple acronym "FUSE" to describe glTF. The first letter F stands for Fast, followed by U, which stands for Universal. Unlike proprietary formats such as usdz by Apple or slddrw by SOLIDWORKS, glTF is defined by a wide independent industry alliance (Khronos), involving manufacturers such as IKEA, eCommerce giants such as Amazon, and internet platforms such as Google and Meta. So glTF is widely accepted globally by
glTF is Simple 🔌
In previous post, we looked into a prior topic of a simple acronym "FUSE" to describe glTF. The first letter F stands for Fast, followed by U, which stands for Universal. Now let's unpack the 3rd letter, S, for Simple, similar to plug and play🔌. This export is super easy, similar to publishing a picture on this 3DEXCITE Product Communicator dialog. There has been questions about the two formats: glb vs. glTF. To cut to the chase, they are from the same standard. Glb is recommended for most
glTF, empowering Internet with 3D
In the past decades, there has been no lack of attempts to employ 3D content on the internet. The rich and interactive 3D presentation makes a perfect and natural extension, to texts, images, audios, and videos. But the effort has been significantly hampered by various challenges, such as difficult authoring and consumption, slow loading speed, browser incompatibility, mobility, data security concerns, and so on. Finally, internet companies such as Google and Meta, eCommence platforms such as
glb or glTF?
On the xHighlight glTF Export dialog, there are two formats on the drop-down menu: glb and glTF. Which should I use then? To cut to the chase, for final deliveries, glb is recommended, which packages data as a binary file. It is a more compact. If you would like to debug, the second choice works better with separate pieces to analyze insights respectively: glTF, bin and textures. By the way, glb and glTF focus on run-time efficiency, so they are NOT authoring formats and work differently
glTF is Fast🚀
A prior post started a simple acronym FUSE to describe glTF. Here let's double click on the first letter F, which stands for Fast. Typically, exporting a glTF from xStudio only takes minutes in the background. You can keep running xStudio without any interruption. The finished export will automatically arrive in your system notification. On the consumption side, speed stands front and center of any user experiences. It has been a challenge in the past decades with 3D on webpages. Now this
What's this nerdy KTX2 texture compression?
By now, you may have heard about glTF, or JPG in 3D, to put it simply. On the xHighlight Export dialog, you may also find an option KTX2 as shown below. Ok, I'm with you. When I saw it the first time, it looked super nerdy to me too. It still does, but hopefully the loading time reduction, thanks to the 3X to 6X cuts in file size and memory consumption, will justify this little inconvenience for us. In short, KTX stands for Khronos Texture, which is an efficient, lightweight container format
[📺 xHighlight App Learning Series | Ep.3] – Learn the basic features
The power of xHighlight (available in the Product Communicator role) is to build interactive product presentations that illustrate and present your product USPs and usage scenarios through videos that are sure to make an impact. In our use case, we aimed to illustrate instructions on the installation of an audio system, which e.g. could quickly assist technical professionals responsible for assembling the loudspeaker through an interactive, 3D training instead of a traditional printed,
How give life to "3D JPG" (glTF) on slides?
A prior post shared how to insert 3D models into MS Powerpoint. @Francesco OORTHUIZEN and I talked about more ideas to give life to 3D on slides. For example, insert a rendering as shown below. The boxy sharp edges above feel rigid and fragmented to me, so personally I like to try various styles to dress them up. Instant results are shown upon various styles and effects. Now let's insert the "3D JPG" (glTF). Francesco shared this cool idea of overlaying it on top of the static rendering
How to reveal internal structures clearly?
Product covers are commonly used to shield users from internal structures and to securely package all components together, such as the red containers or black handles on this jigsaw. What if I'm curious about the inner workings of the jigsaw? How do we reveal internal structures clearly? Section views come handy here to cut out external components in xHighlight. Ok, let's try it out. Does this view below look good? 😅 Not really, it cuts through all the components, which actually muddies the
Insert glb 3D models to MS Office 2021 slides, Word docs or spreadsheets
Just thought you may enjoy a bit holiday fun with 3D on your MS Office 2021 documents🌄 E.g. here is a slide after a 3D glb model was inserted. In the editing mode, you may rotate the model. Right click to find Pan and Zoom in the context menu. Please feel free to try it out with the attached glb by 3DEXCITE Product Communicator, or export your own easily. However, there are some missing textures (such as the translucent blade shield) on the slide😅. Below, you can see the original look
Directionaly align components with 3D Aligner
In an exploded view, the motor rotor ideally should stay aligned vertically with the stator housing to indicate their relationship. So how do we aligned them directionally? This is why you may enjoy the 3D Aligner in xHighlight. It’s like a magnet to carry your part to align with certain directions (edges, axes…). Its button and tooltip are shown below. First, attach the magnet to the part to be repositioned. There are various anchor geometries and resultant derived directions to attach
How to box-select in xHighlight?
@Francesco OORTHUIZEN just pointed out this trick. Sometime, it may feel a lot easier to select all parts in an area by dragging a box. In xHighlight, when you left-click and drag, it rotates the model by default, instead of drawing a box. Now you can press the left mouse button down for 2 seconds, it'll learn you are trying to box-select. Then drag a rectangle and everything in it will be selected🎇 One quick note, any parts touched by this box will be picked up. They don't have to be in the
Select with similar colors or instances?
In xHighlight, a handy selection tool was added several month ago: Select with similar colors or similar instances. The example below shows the differences between these two. The drone flies with multiple propellers. How to select all the blades? Easy. Right click on one blade and pick from the context menu: Select with Similar instances as shown below. Notice only 4 blades on one side was selected. Why? Turns out in the modeling App xDesign, they were given the same name automatically by
Multiple instances of the same part on a Part List?
To assist purchasing decisions, a Part List comes with a column of Quantity by default. Then how to build the accurate quantity of multiple instances? There are both a manual way and an automatic way😉 Let's start with the manual way first, just to understand how it works. Select one bolt instance and toggle on its Part List property on the right-hand panel. Now you'll see the Part List table showing up with this part line. Manually select another instance, and you may see a different ID
Import button difference between xDesign and xStudio
@Emna Sellami and I just met today. Thank you again, Emna! She shared an important observation. The Import button on the xStudio homepage allows 3DXML only. Actually @Deepak Gupta asked a similar question in July. Yeah, indeed, a natural idea on the first step before rendering is to import 3D models to xStudio. However, the process works a bit differently on the platform😅 Apart from software user experience improvements in the future, let me clarify the mechanism a bit to get you started
Import SOLIDWORKS assemblies into xDesign and render them in xStudio
A prior post shared several ways to bring models to the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform. Multiple friends have noted that they may not have access to the 3DEXPERIENCE SOLIDWORKS roles or the Collaborative Designer for SOLIDWORKS role, so let's look closer into a direct import route, which doesn't enjoy the built-in real-time connection between SOLIDWORKS and the platform, but works well as one-time imports. Here is one example of a fire alarm assembly interior. First, kick off the handy buddy, Pack
Before and After: How to improve this presentation?
On presentation slides, flyers, webpages, product manuals and so on, we often lay out images to assist key ideas. Here is a common slide example. We see this kind of presentations all the time. Can we make it better? How would you improve it? From my vantage point, something feels broken. For example, the dark-themed images don't blend in well with the white background. The high contrast makes the images look surprising and obtrusive. Plus, the slide looks so typical, frequent, almost
Easily bring SOLIDWORKS models to Product Communicator
Millions of users are using SOLIDWORKS globally and have accumulated rich sets of 3D models. How do we dress up these models simply in a browser, in 3DEXCITE Product Communicator for high quality renderings, 360 image sequences, glTF, AR, 3D presentations, Technical illustrations...? As you may know, you can easily install Collaborative Design for SOLIDWORKS, a small addin as a bridge from desktop SOLIDWORKS to the platform as shown in this video below. Then off you go. Everything can be
Before and After: How to improve this illustration?
Here is a typical illustration we see in owner's manuals and product instructions. However, being typical doesn't mean it can't be improved. How would you polish it? One key readability issue lies in the back and forth lookups, between index numbers and the actual meanings, which is hard to follow, easy to lose track of, and requires heavy eyeball travels. Hence this idea below to annotate directly in context. That's exactly why 3DEXCITE Product Communicator CATIA Composer
