How to define the fiber direction in the HGO model with 2 fiber families?
THE BACKGROUND I have made a finite element model of the intervertebral disc of the human spine and used the Holzapfel-Gasser-Ogden (HGO) material model to model its mechanical behavior. I have used this material model because two families of fibers can be found in the intervertebral disc (see Figure 1) and the HGO strain energy function has a component to represent the behavior of these fibers. Figure 1. Criss-cross pattern of the fibers of the intervertebral disc. To define the direction of

Is it possible to visualize air breakdown using CST MWS?
Hi, I have a simple question. Let's say we have a voltage source and ground with air in between them. When this voltage source creates an ambient electric field directed towards the ground and the field strength exceeds the air breakdown threshold of approximately 3 MV/m (at standard temperature and pressure), the air becomes conductive and starts to conduct electricity. Is it possible to simulate this scenario and visualize the breakdown of air? I explored a CST project called "3D ESD Generator

Node‑Condensation vs. Continuous Surface‑Quad Mesh in Bonded Tube Simulation
Good afternoon, I’m currently building a model on the 3DEXPERIENCE Cloud, in which fiber‑reinforced tubes are inserted into mating sleeves and bonded. I have a question about mesh setup. Right now, I’m comparing two different approaches for meshing the tubes. Variant 1: In the first approach, I mesh the entire tube with a surface‐quad mesh and assign the appropriate composite‐shell section to it. Variant 2: In the second approach, I split the tube mesh into three separate meshes. The blue

On Demand Tech Talk | When "Good" is not Good Enough: Leveraging simulation in the Virtual Twin Experience for a more sustainable future
▶️If you'd prefer to watch the video in the community, you can view it here Abstract It is commonly accepted that "the better is the mortal enemy of the good" (Montesquieu), a saying that is put into application numerically by the Pareto principle. Applied to engineering, one should strive to achieve the majority of the outcome with the smallest amount of effort, and not waste time and profitably on improving a "Good" design needlessly. Perhaps an infamous example of this is

Material Modeling and Calibration - An Overview and Curriculum
▶SIMULIA E-learning Resources One of the challenges of advanced simulation with Abaqus is knowing how to represent the materials in your structure. Defining a simple linear elastic material model is pretty straightforward. Defining a nonlinear elastic material, such as a rubber or elastomer material is a bit more complicated, but we have some well-developed courses to attend to learn more about that subject. Rubber and elastomeric materials can get even more complicated than just

After my presentation at the RUM2022 in Hanau I had some reminiscence on my 1st talk at the German Abaqus users meeting, University GH Essen, 1999. Dr. David Hibbitt form HKS Inc. was present and some of my recommendations made it into the code (i.e. *INCLUDE, ...; *TIME POINTS, NAME=... ; *RIGID ..; reduced order models, ...). The comments on CPU time are outdated (although, the job you can run overnight remains the relevant limit) and the tyre models have made quantum leaps. Other aspects are

TECHNIA | Visual Scripting for parametric CAD and simulation studies on 3DEXPERIENCE platform | EURONORTH RUM 2025
Abstract: As product complexity continues to accelerate, traditional CAD approaches based on sketch-and-extrude operations have reached their limitations for certain advanced components. These sophisticated geometries now demand algorithmic solutions capable of generating outputs that precisely meet complex engineering requirements. While there are certain solutions like Abaqus/CAE which offers Python scripting capabilities for creating geometries and simulation studies, this approach requires

Improved 3DEXPERIENCE Example: Analysis of Airflow through a Duct
As part of the R2025x FD03 user assistance, SIMULIA R&D updated a 3DEXPERIENCE example that teaches you how to define and run a simulation that models the fluid flow inside of an airduct. In this example, you define a fluid flow simulation using a geometry-based volume definition, and you then model the airflow in the duct to assess its efficiency. To define, run, and evaluate this simulation, you use the following apps: Geometry Idealization Essentials Fluid Scenario Creation Physics Results

Abaqus Python: Alternative Interface for History Output
Summary The History Access module offers a fluent interface for retrieving history data from ODB files. The Python module is provided at the end of this post, along with a video tutorial demonstrating multiple usage examples. Introduction With the increasing number of Machine Learning projects being executed by the SIMULIA Services HUB, we identified the need for a simple and robust way to access history data when post-processing multiple ODB files. To meet this need, we developed a new
Why does the meshing sometimes fail?
Hey guys, I have a problem regarding the reliability of my meshing procedure for the following simulation scenario: The simulation is a 2-degree rotationally symmetric problem. It includes a vertically moving coil along an rotationally symmetric shaft. The rectangular box around the shaft and the coil is a refining feature for better seeding control. It is a manually coupled model, which means: At every coil's position, there is an electromagnetic step (induction heating) first. Secondly, there

Physics Results Explorer not loading cloud results after FD03
UPDATE: Local Run with cloud storage is working fine. Dear SIMULIA Community, is anyone having issues with accessing simulation results stored on the cloud after FD03 update? After a successful simulation we are not able to see any results anymore because Physics Results Explorer is always stucked at this phase
New 3DEXPERIENCE Example: Flexible Deformation of a Connecting Rod in a Crank Wheel
As part of the R2025x FD03 user assistance, SIMULIA R&D created a 3DEXPERIENCE example that illustrates how to create a geometry's finite element substructure and consider its flexible deformation during the static and dynamic loading of a motion simulation. In this example, you simulate the motion of a crank wheel mechanism. During a full rotation of the wheel, the rod experiences alternating compressive, tensile, and bending forces, leading to elastic deformation. You can simulate a part's
New 3DEXPERIENCE Tutorial: Creating, Configuring, and Visualizing Flexible Bodies
As part of the R2025x FD03 user assistance, SIMULIA R&D created a 3DEXPERIENCE tutorial that illustrates how to use flexible bodies to effectively consider the elastic deformation of a body. In Motion Analysis, the model simulates a mini excavator, whereas in Suspension Analysis, it represents a wheel axle system. Your objective is to convert an existing rigid body to a flexible body, configure the flexible body, and then visualize its motion. Motion AnalysisSuspension Analysis To complete this
3DOrchestrate has not completed initialization / failed to launch ext server
Hi all, We are having multiple issues(since 2024x) on Prem on all workstations when clicking Simulate in Functional Gen design app . The error pointed to 3DOrchestrate, which was not set up before. After we installed 3DOrchestrate server, based on DS documentation, the error message changed but still remained. Also the option to run on Server is not available. See attached print screens. Anyone else encountered this issue? any suggestions? Many thanks, Michael
Interference fit in 3DX
Hi everyone, I'm reaching out for some guidance or suggestions on how you would approach the following problem. The setup involves a spring, two bolts, and a flat component (the black part) that the spring is meant to push downward. The task is to preload the bolts, which in turn hold the spring in place and constrain the black part. The assembly I received contains the spring in its undeformed, default shape and position. However, in this state, the spring intersects with multiple components.
Trouble Linking ABAQUS with Fortran and Visual Studio
Hi all, I have trouble linking ABAQUS with Intel and Visual Studio. I have watched multiple tutorials and followed the procedures exactly. However, when I launched the "ABAQUS Command", it says " WARNING: vars.bat does not set up dependencies when invoked directly. Please perform environment setup for UMF before running DPC++ applications.". Also, when I enter command "abaqus info=system", under the Fortran Complier section it says: "Fortran Compiler: Unable to find a Fortran compiler on this
Nylon 12 (PA 12, Polyamide 12) ; TLVP model
posted on May 14, 2023 PA 12 (also known as Nylon 12) is a good general-use plastic with broad additive applications and is known for its toughness, tensile strength, impact strength and ability to flex without fracture. PA 12 has long been used by injection molders due to these mechanical properties. Several years ago a test lab shared some test data on PA12. The test data consists of : Three monotonic pull tests at rates of 5, 50, and 500 mm/min (crosshead velocities). One cyclic test

CST - Electromagnetic Coils
I would like to model 2 superconducting electromagnetic coils separated by 1mm of air or vacuum. No steel core that would limit the magnetic field. I would like to monitor the magnetic fields in the coils by sending current pulses through the charging coil. I've been told to use Abaqus, CST Studio Suite , or Simulia. I have the learning edition of CST Studio Suite. However, I don't think it will allow me to do anything more than define current flowing through a PEC (perfect electrical

How to Create a Cut Through Material Inside the Euler Box in a CEL Model in Abaqus?
Hello, is there a way to create a cut through the material within the Euler box in a CEL model in Abaqus, rather than through the Euler box itself? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Best regards
AI/ML (Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning)
Towards 3D Interactive Design Exploration via Neural Networks Physical simulations are performed at multiple scales covering diverse physical domains. Macro scale continuum simulations at the part and assembly level, usually employing traditional numerical techniques such as 3D Finite Elements or Finite Volumes, are widely used for physics-based product design because of their high predictive value. However, these simulations are often computationally intensive and may take minutes, hours, or
Abaqus CAE Post Processing Script
Hello, I am currently developing a Python script for use in Abaqus CAE that aims to facilitate the saving and resuming of post-processing views. My goal is to make it straightforward to save and revisit any specific views that are displayed at any given time. Ideally, the solution would enable users to resume a view for a similar analysis, such as a subsequent iteration, by simply modifying the filename reference. I would greatly appreciate any insights or guidance you could provide regarding
