Call of UEXTERNALDB
Hi, Typically, UEXTERNALDB will be called at the beginning and end of one time increment. I am wondering if one time increment is attempted multiple times due to convergency issues for example, whether UEXTERNALDB will be called for each attempt or just at the beginning and after the final attempt for the current increment is made. Thanks!
New 3DEXPERIENCE Tutorial: Defining the Properties of a Bushing Using a Document
As part of the R2026x FD01 user assistance, SIMULIA R&D created a 3DEXPERIENCE tutorial that illustrates how to define the properties of a bushing using a document. This tutorial uses the model shown below, which represents an abstraction of a connecting rod mounted to a surrounding structure. While completing this tutorial, you learn how to: Create a document. Add a bushing property file to a document. Attach a bushing document to a product structure. Define the properties of a bushing by
New 3DEXPERIENCE Tutorial: Creating a Curve Tangency Joint
As part of the R2026x FD01 user assistance, SIMULIA R&D created a 3DEXPERIENCE tutorial that illustrates how to create a curve tangency joint. A curve tangency joint constrains two curves from different bodies so that, once assembled, these two curves move along each other with coincident tangents at a single point of contact. While completing this tutorial, you learn how to: Create a curve tangency joint. Create a driver to control the motion of a curve tangency joint. Preview an animation of
New 3DEXPERIENCE Tutorial: Creating a Gear Joint
As part of the R2026x FD01 user assistance, SIMULIA R&D created a 3DEXPERIENCE tutorial that illustrates how to create a gear joint. To simulate the rotational relationship between the gears, you first create a revolute joint for each gear to define its rotational behavior. You then create the gear joint to control the motion of one gear relative to the motion of the other gear in a mechanically accurate manner using a gear ratio that you specify. Finally, you create a driver to control the

Creep User Subroutine Calibration
The creep law shown above is sometimes called the "Bailey-Norton" power law. It has been available in Abaqus for decades, but it has some serious drawbacks. The parameter "A" has odd units that depend upon the value of the other parameters. Because the 3DExperience platform is a 'units aware' software, the Bailey-Norton creep law is not supported there. The creep law shown below is more modern, available in Abaqus since 2019. In this example we show how to set up a calibration of a creep

Hello Community, how to view results with edges in PRE?
Hello, i want to extract some elements based info while post processing the results in Physical Results Explorer (3DExperience), However, the temperature/stress results by default in 3DX/PRE are in rendered form not in the mesh/edges form as shown in first attached photo (done in Abaqus as we can see edge, render, or other view there), but in PRE/3DX i am unable to find this option, your support will be appreciated in this regard, TIA.

Issues VFILM subroutine
Hello :) as the title already states I have issues with using the VFILM subroutine. I want to use that subroutine in an explicit simulation. For simplicity I tested it with just a square workpiece. That workpiece has an initial temperature of 300°C and the top surface is cooled via Surface film condition with fictional values h=1000mW/mm²K and T_sink=20°C. The problem is, when using the funktion in the GUI, I have a result of HFL~5.3e+4 with a temperature around 80°C. When I am using the

Jorgen Bergström's Three Network Model (TNM aka TN model)
Quote from Jorgen Bergström : User-subroutines were recently published on the SIMULIA Knowledge-Base to allow the Abaqus PRF model to replicate Bergström's Three Network Model. Let us call this the "PRF_TNM" model. Abaqus solver 2025 HF1 or later can be used. This post describes how the 3DExperience Material Calibration App can be used to calibrate the PRF_TNM model. I will be showing this with the development version of the app, and this capability will be released as of R2026x FD01.

The Darveaux viscous behavior was added to the PRF model in the Abaqus solver in 2024FD02 The modified Darveaux viscous behavior was added to the PRF model in the Abaqus solver in 2024FD03 For 2026x FD01 the Darveaux and modified Darveaux creep laws have been added to the PRF
Guidance on building a system-level Digital Twin for an STM32-based BLDC propulsion hardware setup
Hello everyone, I am an Electrical and Electronics Engineering student working on an academic research project focused on developing a system-level Digital Twin of a BLDC motor propulsion hardware setup implemented on an STM32 microcontroller. The Digital Twin is embedded and runs in real time on the STM32, using live measurements of voltage, current, PWM, RPM, torque, and thrust obtained from a motor test bench. The objective is to predict propulsion behavior and support proactive control
SPH PER ELEMENT CONVERSION SETTINGS
Hi everyone, I am currently trying to replicate FEA compression simulations using an SPH approach. As a first step, I ran a basic SPH simulation with the following parameters: smoothing length = 1, smoothing factor = 1, and number of neighbours = 1. With this setup, the simulation appeared to run stably. HowevAbaqusAbaqus CAEsphSIMULIA r, the results did not match my FEA predictions. Following the documentation, I then attempted to increase the number of neighbours. When I set the neighbour
Zig-zag / snap-back behavior in Static Riks capacity curves of transmission tower
Dear Abaqus Community, I am performing nonlinear collapse analysis of a lattice transmission tower using Abaqus/Standard – Static, Riks to obtain capacity curves (wind speed vs top displacement). I ran 100 stochastic models (LHS-based uncertainty in material and geometry). For most models, the capacity curve shows a smooth ascending branch, a peak, and post-peak softening. However, in some models, I observe a zig-zag / vertical clustering near the peak load: Displacement remains almost constant
3DEXPERIENCE / SIMULIA Flow – Sliding Mesh Rotating Zone “Partial Contact with Surrounding Regions” Error in Propeller Transient Simulation
Hello everyone, I am running a transient CFD simulation of a propeller in SIMULIA / 3DEXPERIENCE Flow Solver (R2026x) using a sliding mesh rotating zone, and I am consistently encountering the following error: Rotating zone has partial contact with its surrounding regions. Check the mesh at the interface. Problem setup Geometry: Propeller inside a cylindrical rotating fluid zone Cylinder embedded inside a stationary outer bounding box Topology: One Rotating Zone Fluid (full cylinder
26x FD01 Calibration : Truncate Test Data
The test data shown above can be found here: 1018 Steel For the R2026x FD01 release of the 3DExperience Material Calibration App we have added a new feature to the test data editing functionality called "Truncate", or we could say "Truncate at Peak". When working with metal plasticity stress-strain curves, it is rather common that one wants to truncate the test data at the nominal stress peak. In prior versions, one would delete all the points after the peak, but it might take some time to
26x FD01 Calibration : New spacing option for Test Data Editing
In the Test Data Editing section of the Material Calibration App, under Decimate or Regularize, the App currently offers the user the choice of spacing as linear or logarithmic. In a different area of the App dealing with hardening curves we had a more general spacing option called "bias". This bias capability is explained here in the 3DExperience docs: Supported Built-In Material Models We thought that adding this more general "biased" feature to Test Data Editing would give the user some
26x FD01 Calibration : Creep Master Curve
The PVC creep test data you see above is synthetic test data created by running Abaqus with a known material model. The material model comes from this post (based on real DMA test data) Generate Master Curve from DMA test data See also : PVC : DMA Test Data Each dataset is created by subjecting a unit-cube model to a 10MPa stress load. There are 7 datasets at 7 different temperatures. The temperatures are shown in the legend, in degrees C. This process of generating a Master Curve, and
26x FD01 Calibration : Stress Relaxation Master Curve
Several years ago we added the ability to generate a Master Curve from DMA (storage & loss) test data. I had some real DMA test data for a PVC material and created a DMA-based Master Curve post here: Generate Master Curve from DMA test data That exercise created the following Abaqus material model for PVC: Using that Abaqus material model, I ran a number of separate Abaqus unit-cube analyses to generate some synthetic test data for Stress Relaxation (each run at a different temperature).

The image above is from R2025x. In the R2025x version of the Material Calibration App, it is not possible to select to use a volumetric test dataset for the Marlow model or for the Valanis-Landel model. A new feature has been added in R2026x FD01 to allow the use of a volumetric test dataset for Marlow and Valanis-Landel models. This new feature is only applicable in Numerical and FE modes. The image below is from R2026x FD01 and shows the Marlow model in Numerical mode. Notice the plot in

Issue with Fluid-Solid Mesh Intersection and Coverage in BPHE Zero-Thickness Regions using FMK
Regarding the 3DEXPERIENCE Fluid Dynamics Engineer (FMK) role, I am working on a simulation for a Brazed Plate Heat Exchanger (BPHE). This product consists of multiple corrugated plates stacked and brazed together to form a single unit. Due to the geometric nature of the stacked wavy plates, the fluid domain contains a significant number of "zero-thickness" regions at the points of curvature intersection. Despite applying Local Mesh Control in FMK, we are encountering two critical issues: Mesh

26x FD01 Calibration : Hencky hyperelasticity added
As the slide above says, the Hencky hyperelastic model was added in 2024x FD01 and 2025x FD01 to A/Std and A/Exp. The motivation was NOT to have yet another material model for elastomers, it was to have a finite strain version of classical Hooke's law. In R2026x FD01 we have added the Hencky hyperelastic model to the Material Calibration App. The video below demonstrates a calibration using the Hencky hyperelastic material model and also demonstrates the export of unit-cube models (another
Direction of Rotational Body Force in Abaqus/CAE
Hello, I was playing around with the Rotational Body Force load in Abaqus CAE 2025 and am confused by the direction of rotation. For a simple hollow cuboid test case, I am applying a rotary acceleration like this: So a positive rotary acceleration about the z-axis. However, when I look at the resulting body motion, it is experiencing a negative rotation about the z-axis. So my questions are: Am I misunderstanding the definition of axis of rotation via point 1 and 2? Is the direction of the
26x FD01 Calibration : New Paperboard model added
A new material model for paperboard was added to the Abaqus solvers in 2025x FD01. This model is based on work by Xia, Boyce and Parks (2002) and the follow-on work by Tomas Andersson (2006). This material model has been added to the 3DExperience Material Calibration App as of R2026x FD01. This material model is an anisotropic elastic-plastic model with decoupled in-plane versus through thickness behavior. Here is an example of the Abaqus .inp file keyword interface: These material
26x FD01 Calibration : Cast Iron material model added
The tensile and compressive uniaxial test data above comes from the Abaqus Benchmark manual, section : Biaxial tests on gray cast iron. You can read more about the yield surface and flow rule in the Abaqus docs. The video below demonstrates how to create a material model for the cast iron plasticity material model. The zip file below contains the test data needed to replicate the video above. Back to: 2026x FD01 Material Calibration New Features

Comparing Neo-Hookean and Ogden N=1 hyperelastic models
I found an Abaqus Verification Manual problem that contained and compared a UHYPER user-subroutine to a UHYPER_STRETCH user-subroutine. The R2025x version of the Material Calibration App only supports the UHYPER version (based on invariants), but in our developments for R2026x we have already added the UHYPER_STRETCH version (based on stretches). In the UHYPER version it calculates a response for a Neo-Hookean material model. In the UHYPER_STRETCH version it calculates the response for an

Acceleration on Point Masses
Hi, I am using Abaqus CAE 2025 Standard/Explicit with Static, General step with python and would like to: apply inertial acceleration and an inertial angular acceleration to a specific set in my abaqus model the set contains an instance (with shell elements) and some point masses rigidly connected to the instance this is to replace the inertia relief formulation to allow computing two differently moving bodies (inertia relief will treat them as one body if I understand correctly)
Eurocode - dead weight increase
Hello community, I am currently performing a structural simulation of a walkway platform using the Linear Structural Validation app. The platform is verified according to Eurocode. For the Ultimate Limit State (ULS), the dead load (self-weight) must be applied with a partial factor γG = 1.35. How is this factor correctly applied in the app — by scaling the gravity load, increasing the material density, or through a load combination? Best Regards, William

fieldOutputRequests in ABAQUS
Hi, I am trying to use fieldOutputRequests() in python to define the output frequency of the output. I notice that there is an argument called timeInterval in this function with which I can specify at what time point to write the output. For example, if I set it as 1, then I get the results every 1 in total time. But if one time increment passes the time point to output, then the result I see in odb will be from the last time increment before the time point or is the result interpolated still

Simpack Parameter Overview
Hello, I am working on a project for university. The goal is to analyze parameters in Simpack based on their naming and description patterns. I am quite new to Simpack, but as far as I know, when building a Simpack model and for example a body in that model, Simpack auto generates a name and description for the parameters of that body, e. g. name "m" and Descriptiton "Mass of body". I would like to know if there is some sort of database or document which gives an overview of names and

CST - Magnitude and phase
Following ther reply to my previous thread: I have created an 'RFID' system with a reader antenna and tag (both are just dipoles) separated by 300mm - see image below. I then calculate the S-matrix in 3D mode. After this, I move to the schematic view and produce this schematic, which modulates the tag impedance between open and short modes. this produces the following o2, which shows modulation in the CW signal from the reader: However, this is just a real-valued signal. If we consider the

CST - Simulation of Long Bounded Structures
Dear Simulia community, I am looking for an appropriate simulation tool for an electrically large model in CST Studio Suite . I am designing an optical directional coupler, consisting of two adjacent waveguides with cores made of different semiconductor materials. The length of the directional coupler is large compared to the minimal wavelength, so the computing time with the time domain solver is unreasonably long. Is anyone aware of a suitable approximation method that is implemented in CST
Creep for asphaltic pavement permenant deformation.
Hi, I am aiming to predict Permanent deformation and/ relevant parameters for multilayer pavement systems. using step type:visco, loading: Cyclic tire pressure (0.8 MPa) applied via a periodic Haversine amplitude (40 km/h simulation). Asphalt layer: Power Law Creep (TIME) with A=1.5e-08, n=1.9 and m=-0.18. Elastic Modulus $E=1800 (tried 1000 as well MPa). All other layers are modelled as purely elastic.Interactions (TIE) .Boundary Conditions: Symmetry on sides, Encastre at the bottom. The
Embedded constrain problem
Hi, i want to model this on Abaqus, i tried to use Embedded constrains for rebars that i modelled as truss-element but the problem during the running i got an error of the host region " concrete " have some nodes out " form the rebar " ? any ideas ?
A Historic Day for Abaqus - Explicit GPU Acceleration
Today with the release of 2026 FD01, Abaqus is introducing GPU acceleration for Explicit analyses. As far as I'm aware, this makes Abaqus the only major commercial explicit FEA code to enable users to leverage GPU compute. We're very excited to release this new capability - the culmination of a major effort within Abaqus R&D. That said, in some sense it's just the start of a journey, as we plan to continue building and improving this technology into the future. Our users are an important

Information on Wave6 for students
Hi, I got a request from a student who asked if Wave6 is included in the package "3DEXPERIENCE ENGINEER for Students", which includes Simulia. Is it included? If not, do we have student licenses of Wave6? He needs to perform vibroacoustic simulation. Thank you in advance for the feedback!
ELEMENT DELETION
Hello everyone, I am modeling a 2D lattice (wire structure) in Abaqus and applying uniaxial tension. The lattice members are modeled as 2D beam elements (B21). I have defined a ductile damage model under the material definition (*Damage Initiation / *Damage Evolution), and I can visually see some members “break” or lose stiffness during the analysis. My question is about element deletion for B21 and how it should be reflected in STATUS: Is it actually possible to trigger element deletion for B21

Abaqus License problem question.
Hi everyone, hope you’re doing well. I have a question about license deployment. We applied a new license to the customer’s client PC—meaning we converted that user PC into a new license server. Now the customer has two license servers in total: the existing server PC and the newly configured customer PC. We are using FlexNet (host ID = MAC address–based licensing). This is not DSLS, so the situation is different. The issue is that after rebooting the next day, the newly configured customer PC

Inquiry on DSA Capabilities in Abaqus/CAE 2018 for Spring and Connector Elements
Hello. I am contacting you regarding questions about DSA (Design Sensitivity Analysis) in Abaqus/CAE 2018 version. I am currently conducting research on spring elements. For my research, I need to use DSA in Abaqus to compute sensitivities, and I would like to ask: Q1. Is it possible to set the spring stiffness value input in a spring element as a design parameter, and the nodal displacement value as a design response for DSA? Q2. For connector elements (type: bushing or Cartesian+Cardan),

Extract vertex/corner/primary nodes
Hello all, I would like to extract only the vertex/primary/corner (whatever way to be called) nodes (or leave out the mid nodes) of all elements in an assembly in *.odb file of Abaqus for creating a node set. Are there Abaqus python APIs existing for the specified operation? If not, is there any alternate methods to do that?
Advanced RF Filters with FD3D
Did you know the extent of advanced filter topologies and implementations you can attain with Filter Designer 3D ? We’re talking extended boxes, non-resonating nodes, split-rings, dual-mode cavities, SIW, etc. Here’s a few examples to tickle the imagination! Of course, you can always create models with your own approach and just optimize it using the advanced surrogate extraction (provided by FD3D) and the trust-region framework optimizer. Give it a try in CST Studio Suite 2026 and let us know
Bistable Laminates Simulation
Hi, I have been facing some confusion on doing simulation with axial test in bistable laminates (composite) in ABAQUS to capture the snap through load. What I need is- Do I need to assign a curvature of the laminate while creating the part? If I need to apply impact load with low velocity (5 in/min) until the laminate transform from one stable state to another and then stop the load, how can I assign it? If I need to assign boundary condition at the four corners of the laminate and fixed the

Moving Brush
The brush has a rotating eccentric mass on top. It does not have external loads except gravity. The bristles are meshed with beam elements. The simulation is in Abaqus/Explicit. The animation is in the Physics Results Explorer.
CST - RFID/Backscatter Simulation
Hi, I would like to simulate a real world system I have but in CST Studio Suite to get a better understanding of the electromagnetics behind it. What I have is an SDR (emulating an RFID reader here with a monostatic antenna) transmitting continuous wave in the far-field, e.g. 1m away. In the near field I have two 'tags', which in this case I am modelling as simple dipoles. I would like the tags to switch their load impedances between short and open, i.e. reflecting and absorbing - which I have
How to include Hill Stress/ Anisotropic stress using SUBROUTINE CREEP?
Hello, I am trying to do anisotropic creep simulation using subroutine creep. For validation purpose I am simulating hyperbolic sine creep law with hill ratio. I can do simulation with default Abaqus material library. But when I try to modify subroutine creep then it gives me an error. Also I am able to use subroutine creep for sine hyperbolic creep. When I go through this reference:
Issue transferring result from analysis to analysis (deviations)
Hello, I am currently working on a heat treatment simulation of case hardening using Abaqus/CAE 2025. My approach involves two sequential simulations: First, I perform a diffusion analysis using a Mass Diffusion step with DC3D8 element types. This results in a specific carbon concentration distribution (represented by CONC and NNC11). In the second stage, I conduct a quenching simulation. For this, I am using the C3D8T element type within a Coupled Temp-Displacement step to account for
Mesh-distortion
Hello, I am modelling a three-point bending test for a 3DCP specimen in Abaqus/Explicit, and after running i find this distortion even though i didn't get any warning message about distortion element ? mesh : quadratic tetrahedral elements of type C3D10M
Contact Penetration issue in General Static Analysis
Subject: Seeking help with Contact Penetration issue in General Static Analysis (Valve/Piston Assembly) Hi everyone, I am facing a strange contact issue in Abaqus/Standard. Previously, the simulation worked perfectly with a Full model, and the contact interaction was recognized without any issues. However, to improve computational efficiency, I switched to a Quarter model and added Symmetry boundary conditions. Since this change, the valve now completely penetrates the piston, even though no
3-point bending test supports modelling
Hello, I am modelling a three-point bending test for a 3DCP specimen in Abaqus/Explicit. The supports (S1 and S2) are modelled as discrete rigid shell plates (R3D4). I created a reference point (RP) for each support and applied the boundary conditions at the RPs according to the test rules: S1: Ux = 0, Uy = 0, Uz = 0; Rx = 0, Ry = free, Rz = 0 S2: Ux = free, Uy = 0, Uz = 0; Rx = 0, Ry = free, Rz = 0 When running Abaqus/Explicit, the job aborts with an error indicating that one or more rigid
