Free tool to evaluate INP
Hello I have been coding for decades starting with Moldflow in 1979.... still coding now partnering with 6 different AI tools to take my code and enhance. Way back i wrote interfaces and FEA conversion programs to inspect the quality of the models. After seeing many issues from INP's from our partners i decided to build a few new tools for Abaqus. I share the final executable along with guided walk throughs for drop, random vibe and more. Below is an old posting, i am up to V24 and code
CST - Extracting 6D Phase Space and Profile of a Bunch in ES-PIC Solver
Greetings, Previously, I performed a simulation in CST Studio Suite of a gridded electron gun to be able to extract electron bunches instead of continuous emission. Consider the following animation, I would like to fix the frame at a specific time, for example this frame, In this frame, I would like to make a location constraint. For example, I want to tell CST to consider a box around the extracted bunch (I will define the [x_min, x_max ,y_min, y_max, z_min, z_max] manually). Then I tell CST

Jorgen Bergström's Three Network Model (TNM aka TN model)
Quote from Jorgen Bergström : User-subroutines were recently published on the SIMULIA Knowledge-Base to allow the Abaqus PRF model to replicate Bergström's Three Network Model. Let us call this the "PRF_TNM" model. Abaqus solver 2025 HF1 or later can be used. This post describes how the 3DExperience Material Calibration App can be used to calibrate the PRF_TNM model. I will be showing this with the development version of the app, and this capability will be released as of R2026x FD01.

Problem - Differential matrix has negative diagonal entries
Hi all, I am modelling a stiffened composite panel under displacement loading (uniaxial compression). I am using S4R elements for both the skin and the stiffener, and the stiffener foot is tied to the skin. On the transverse edges, I apply u1=1 and u1=-1 in the loading step. I also constrain u2=0 at both the bottom-left and bottom-right skin nodes (in the initial step). In addition, the outer perimeter edges of the skin are constrained with u3=0 (again in the initial step) to model a simply

CST - Energy Histogram Analysis in ES-PIC Solver for Particle 2D Monitor
Greetings, I designed a gridded electron gun in CST Studio Suite. I would like to prove a phenomenon called, 'short-tail and long-tail bunch extraction' in the space between cathode and grid area. I will explain what I need, According to the Fig.1, I attached multiple 2D monitors in the space between cathode and grid, Fig. 1: 20 layers of particle 2D monitors are assigned in between cathode and grid. Cathode is on the left side; grid is on right side. In a fixed time frame, let us say t = 0.290
Does Abaqus/CAE VUEL visualization limitation also prevent SVARS output/extraction from the ODB?
Dear SIMULIA Community, I would like to ask a follow-up clarification related to VUEL output in Abaqus/Explicit. Abaqus documentation states that: Plotting of user elements is not supported in Abaqus/CAE. However, if the user elements contain displacement degrees of freedom, they can be overlaid with standard elements; and model plots of these standard elements can be displayed. I understand that this means VUEL/user-defined elements cannot be directly plotted or contoured in Abaqus/CAE like
VUEL `SVARS` not visible in Abaqus/Explicit ODB; only HJC matrix `SDV` appears
I am using Abaqus/Explicit with two different formulations in the same model: The matrix is modelled using the HJC material model. The fibre/interface bond-link behaviour is modelled using a VUEL user element. My objective is to visualize the damage variables stored in the VUEL state variables, mainly SVARS(9), SVARS(10), and SVARS(11). However, in the Visualization module, I can only see the HJC/matrix material state variables, such as the HJC damage variable appearing as SDV. The VUEL-related

What is "FS" parameter in JH2 ceramic model
Hi all, I am currently using the JH-2 model in Abaqus for ceramic modeling through the built-in material subroutine. However, I have encountered an issue with the FS parameter, which must be specified. The simulation results are highly sensitive to this parameter. For example, when I set FS = 2.0, the ceramic exhibits unrealistically ductile behavior, resembling that of metals. In contrast, using FS = 0.2 leads to excessive element deletion. Despite its apparent importance, most studies

Lead-free Solder
About a decade ago several advanced creep models were added to Abaqus for modeling the creep of lead-free solder. At first they were added as "built-in" creep user-subroutines, then later as native and fully documented models. These are the Double-Power, the Anand, and the Darveaux creep models. There was a nice Knowledge Base article written to disseminate this information: And a nice Tech Brief: In 2011, several of my SIMULIA colleagues wrote a NAFEMS paper about the calibration of

How to display a simulation report?
Hello SIMULIA Community, at the end of my simulation I generated an automatic report to easily share my methodology with other colleagues (we are using 3DEXPERIENCE R2026x FD01 on-cloud). Unfortunately, I realized that the document is not a simple word file but an engineering document linked/embedded to the simulation object, and it is not possible to easily display it just by using either 3DPlay or Document Manager widgets. It seems that Simulation Finder native app has to be used to display
Cyclic Jump Technique - UEL - Abaqus
In my current work, I am trying to integrate the “Cyclic Jump Technique” as introduced back then in 2006 from Cojocaru by modifying my UEL Subroutine. The methodology is as following. An initial simulation for 6 cycles is executed. Then I extract from the ".odb" at last frame [end] the Displacements and Internal Variables. Thereafter the second simulation is initiated, where it contains two Loading Steps. In the first step the Extracted Displacement is applied as displacement control load

CST - How to place a unit cell of any shape conformal to a tangent-ogive geometry in CST MWS?
Hi, I attempted to place simple unit cells (circular rings) on a tangent-ogive geometry, but I was unable to make them properly conformal to the surface. The workflow I followed is outlined below: Calculated a set of equidistant points (Pi) on the radome surface. Computed the local tangents (Ti) and normals (Ni) at each of these points. Used these vectors to define a local coordinate system (WCS) at each (Pi) , and placed the unit cells accordingly. However, after placing the unit cells, the

Severe contact penetration after element deletion (C3D10M, J-C Damage) in Explicit quasi-static compression
I am currently running a quasi-static compression simulation of a TPMS (Triply Periodic Minimal Surface) lattice structure using Abaqus/Explicit, and I am encountering a severe mesh penetration issue immediately after element deletion is triggered. Setup: Mesh: C3D10M, 0.2 mm, distortion control ON,element deletion ON. Material: J-C plasticity + J-C damage initiation + displacement-based evolution (0.02 mm). Contact: General contact, hard normal, friction 0.15. Issue: ①: Top layer elements
Need help in 3D orthogonal cutting of wood.
If someone can share resources on how to model an orthogonal cutting of wood case, using built in abaqus capabilities, as Vumat is taking alot of time. Also if someone can share VUMAT that also shows chip formation while wood cutting. It would be a great help for me. Thanks.
Abaqus torsion of cylinder: top surface remains rigid (no warping)
Hi All, I modeled torsion of a hollow cylinder according to the attached image from a paper. but my results show the top surface stays rigid like a rotated circle! while the image shows it deforms. Does anyone have similar experience? I would appreciate your comments!
How to - Composites Simulations with Element Deletion in 3DExperience
Hi everyone, I am running simulations of composites materials undergoing various types of loading conditions. The material properties used contain both damage initiation and damage evolution criteria (i.e. Hashin), and the damage status can be requested through output requests. However, I could not find the options to enable element deletion once the material is fully degraded (i.e. damage variable = 1). I remembered this option can be enabled quite easily in Abaqus. However, that does not
Phased Array - Active Coupling
When using the Full Array simulation, how to compute the active coupling between elements for a phased array?
Evaluate CPRESS in a subroutine
Hello everyone, i want to model a contact of an Eulerian Material with a Lagrangian Surface using the CEL Method with Abaqus 2025. Since that method does not support the thermal interaction, I am trying to write a subroutine. First, I need to know what elements are in contact with fluid. Therefore I want to evaluate, where CPRESS (or CFNM) > 0 but I can't find a subroutine that supports that. With VUSDFLD and VGETVRM I can't load CPRESS (or CFNM), VFRICTION does not support Eulerian material

CST - AC Voltage Applied to an Object in CST
Greetings, I intend to perform a triode simulation alongside particle tracking in CST Studio Suite Tracking solver. This is the idea I have in mind: Imagine we have an electron gun, but in front of the cathode there is a thin metal plate (like a mesh grid) that has an alternating voltage with a specific frequency. CST should consider a general time domain and a time step. In each time step, that electrode has a specified voltage relative to time; therefore, each time step is an electro-static
Material Orientation in 3DEXPERIENCE Simulation
When using materials such as anisotropic materials, I specify the material direction in the section properties. Is there a way to verify which direction was actually applied as a result of this specification? Since the orientation of the coordinate system changes depending on the location, I would like to verify this at multiple points.
Ties to reference points won't respect boundary conditions
I have been tasked with running a compression test on a femur bone, by applying boundary conditions to reference points and then getting the force displacement from them. however the model seem to rotate when I use tie functions to connect them with the element sets I have created, but works fine when applying the boundary conditions directly to the sets. below is my set up for the ties. I am a bit new to abacus so any advice on how to fix this would be appreciated: element Set 1 has been
CST - Inquiry about ISAR image generation and focusing issues
Hi everyone, I am a graduate student working on ISAR image simulation using CST Studio Suite . I have been trying to replicate the high-quality imaging results shown in the paper "Synthetic SAR Image Generation using Sensor, Terrain and Target Models". I have implemented both the Backprojection (BP) algorithm and the small-angle 2DIFT algorithm (with windowing and zero-padding). However, my reconstructed images suffer from poor focusing and significant speckle noise in the background (vacuum
CST - Simulia CST studio start issue
Hello, We have an issue creating or opening new project in Simulia CST Studio Suite . When we open the project or make a new one, CST freeze at opening 3D view. It just stops loading that window, look at the picture: We tried updating graphic card drivers, reinstalled Simulia but nothing helped. Simulations or schematic view works normal. What can it be, how to solve this?
CST - Impact of VBScript Deprecation on CST Studio Suite VBA Macros
Hi all, I am currently using VBA scripting in CST Studio Suite for automation and macro development. Microsoft recently announced the deprecation of VBScript in Windows: https://devblogs.microsoft.com/microsoft365dev/how-to-prepare-vba-projects-for-vbscript-deprecation/ This raised some concerns regarding the long-term stability of CST VBA workflows. I would like to ask: Does CST’s VBA environment rely on VBScript components internally (e.g., VBScript.RegExp, scripting runtime, or .vbs
CST - Fix for "Error in Calculating Solver Matrix"
Good morning everyone, I am using CST Studio Suite 2024 Learning Edition and I am encountering a recurring and blocking issue. When I build a design and run the initial simulation, everything works perfectly. However, if I try to change the mesh values in the Global Mesh Properties (while ensuring I stay well below the 100,000 cells limit of the Learning Edition) or if I set up a Parameter Sweep, the simulation is interrupted and returns the following error in the Messages window: "Error in
CST - Project migrated from CST Microwave Studio 2024 to 2026 crashes during optimization
Dear Support, I have encountered problem during optimization process in CST Studio Suite . Recently I converted my project files from CST 2024 to CST 2026 because of workstation migration and now I don't have access to older update version. Now often when I want to start calculation, error window appears that says: It is happening mostly after few initial iterations of optimization. I don't know if this case is related to older version files or simply caused by modeling mistake. I hope that
CST - Field Source Monitor
Hello all, I have never used the field source monitor in CST Studio Suite , I am doing so in a PIC simulation of a magnetron. There is not much information on these monitors in the help docs, so it has been a lot of trial and error. I have fixed all errors and warnings I get regarding the field monitors. Now, after the sim runs, I see an .ffm file of the field source monitor's name that is thousands of KB, indicating everything worked and field data was saved at the specified frequency.
Best way to batch-run modal analysis on thousands of Abaqus models?
Hello everyone, I have around 5,000 FEM models of plates, each with a different beading pattern, and I need to run modal analysis on all of them. Has anyone automated something like this in Abaqus? I’m looking for a way to batch-process the models, submit the jobs automatically, and extract the eigenfrequencies/mode shapes afterward. Are there existing Python scripts, workflows, or best practices for handling this kind of large modal-analysis study efficiently? Thanks in advance!
How can I delete the unit more freely?
Greetings: I am currently using the Explicit module of Abaqus to simulate the penetration of a bullet into a metal component. After reducing the stress wave through viscous pressure, I use the "initial state" to transfer the data to the "standard" module. Currently, I have encountered a problem: In the Explicit simulation, there are some elements that have not failed but have detached from the main body of the component. These elements will seriously affect the convergence of the
