SIMULIA Structures eNews | January '23

Abaqus 2023 brings with it a range of new features and performance upgrades that make it an even more powerful tool for structural simulation. These new capabilities, found across the Abaqus product suite, can be found on our website at the link below.

We also have several Tech Talks for you to enjoy and learn from. The quirkily titled "Jugglers on Unicycles - Abaqus/Explicit in a Nutshell" introduces nonlinear simulation and shows how you can extend the power of structural simulation. "Vortex Induced Vibration" covers the multiphysical problem of structures such as pipes and cables vibrating in a fluid flow. "Connector Elements in Abaqus" offers an overview of combining meshes with connectors, and shows how to use them. "Parametric Composite Defect Template for Urban Air Mobility" shows how structural defects in composite materials can be simulated on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform with pre-defined templates.

If this is not enough, recordings of all our recent Tech Talks can now be found in the SIMULIA Community. We also have articles on new EU eco-design rules and concrete cracking simulation. Whatever your interest in structural simulation, we hope you find something useful.

E-Seminar

Jugglers on Unicycles - Abaqus/Explicit in a Nutshell

Sometimes even a powerful implicit code like Abaqus/Standard fails for tough nonlinear problems. This Tech Talk demonstrates how Abaqus/Explicit can expand the range of problems you can tackle with simulation.

Vortex-Induced Vibration

This Tech Talk shows how to tackle the modeling challenges of Vortex-Induced Vibration (VIV) problems, for relatively long, slender structures such as pipes/risers/cables. A comparison will be shown with published results from a paper that considers a tensioned, vertical, composite pipe in a test tank.

Connector Elements in Abaqus

Connector elements allow users to create mechanical combinations of finite element meshes. This Tech Talk covers an overview of connection types in Abaqus, the definitions of connections in terms of Abaqus keywords, and some examples of what connectors can do.

Parametric Composite Defect Template for Urban Air Mobility

To ensure structural integrity, Urban/Advanced Air Mobility (UAM/AAM) vehicle manufacturers are required to perform fatigue and damage tolerance (F&DT) studies across design, manufacturing, and in-service stages. This Tech Talk explains how to model pre-existing delamination defects in existing structures to analyze the effect of such defects on the structure's performance.

Modeling Cracking in Reinforced Concrete Structures

Concrete structures need to be reinforced in regions subject to tension, to avoid cracking and structural failure. This blog post illustrates how structural simulation can identify regions of tensile stress within concrete structures, and predict the formation and propagation of cracks, both under uniform loads and blast loading.
