Hi,
I am having problems with a gear analysis. My aim is to apply a torque to the input gear and fix the output gear to measure the stresses in the gears and at the contact.
I have been following the methodology in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYJFG5ZA03U
Information about my model:
1. Geomtery
My geometry differs from the videos as my gears are not initially in contact, as shown below.
2. Step information
I am using a Dynamic implicit step.
- time period = 1
- initial increment size = 1e-5
- minimum increment size = 1e-8
3. Interactions
- Contact property is set to: normal behavior and with tangential behavior as penalty and friction coeff = 0.1
- I am using a surface-to-surface for the contact with the two gear teeth surfaces selected (shown in picture below)
- I have created kinematic couplings between the centre of the gears and the surfaces of the hubs for both gears, all degrees of freedom are constrained within the coupling menu
4. Loads
- I applied a boundary condition to the node at the centre of the fixed gears shaft and applied the 'encastre' option
- the input gear boundary condition is set to rotation and displacement with all degrees of freedom set to zero except the rotation of the gear, this BC is applied to the node in the centre of the shaft
- A moment load is applied to the node at the centre of the input gear in the direction of the rotation
5. Mesh
I think the mesh is alright, I am using the 'tet' option.
6. Results
- the results from the analysis show the hub surface of the input gear to be loaded
- I would of expected that the moment applied to the input gear would lead to a rotation of the input gear but it doesn't move, meaning no contact is made
Please can someone offer me guidance or point out any obvious errors in my model
Thanks
