Is there a setting that i'm missing?

Trimming and extending works with lines that are either horizontal or vertical but when I perform these two functions on other angled lines it isn't always successful.

I wondered if it had to do lines being in different layers or a matter of lines in different display orders but doesn't seem to be the case.
