Abstract:
The Power of Unified Modeling and Simulation in Revolutionizing Product Development From Concept to Detailed Design: Success Stories and Future Directions
We investigate how fundamental aerodynamic and structural engineering concepts and computational tools can be applied at the concept/early-design stage to create quick designs for car roof assemblies that ensure safety and structural stability before proceeding with the styling of the vehicle for aerodynamic efficiency and certification purposes. We will discuss the challenges associated with designing complex structures and how designer-driven simulation can bring together engineers, stylists, and designers to overcome them. The methods from this study can also be used to design structures in other industries such as Aerospace & Defense and Industrial Equipment.
In addition, we will demonstrate how designer-driven simulation can be applied to the offshore industry. By using a digital twin of subsea equipment, virtual drop and lift tests can be conducted to ensure the equipment can withstand harsh underwater conditions and safely support their weight during installation. We will present detailed engineering workflows for this industry and showcase the importance of virtual simulations in the design process.
Presenter Biography:
Joe AMODEO is the Director for Process Automation & Optimisation within SIMULIA R&D.
Joe graduated from Cambridge University and gained a Ph.D. from Imperial College before joining Jaguar Cars as an Aerodynamicist in 1998. Joe was responsible for the aerodynamic development of a number of Jaguar vehicles, using physical test methods and CFD and eventually became the Technical Specialist for Aerodynamics at JLR. Joe then joined Exa Corporation in 2005 as their first UK employee in order to focus exclusively on CFD with the PowerFLOW toolset.
At Exa Joe was heavily involved in the development and deployment of the PowerFLOW toolset for automotive and motorsport across the world. In 2017 Exa was acquired by Dassault Systèmes as part of their SIMULIA brand. Joe now manages a team dedicated to delivering automated simulation & optimization processes to SIMULIA customers worldwide. These automated solutions typically leverage the unified Modelling and Simulation data model of the 3DEXPERIENCE® platform, otherwise known as MODSIM (MODeling & SIMulation).
