Specimens used in fracture mechanics

There are a variety of specimens used to study delamination of composites and fracture of adhesives. Abaqus offers several modeling features in this area, with training information available in the Composites class and the Fracture & Failure class.

This is a 2D model, using cpe4i plane strain elements for the beams and coh2d4 cohesive elements to model the adhesive bonding the beams. Runs in about 130 secs on my laptop.

DCB - Double Cantilever Beam, from Workshop 4

This is a 2D model using cpe4i plane strain elements for the beams and coh2d4 cohesive elements to model the adhesive bonding the beams.  Geometry comes from ASTM D3433.

DCB - ASTM D3433 (tapered DCB, aka TDCB)

This is a 2D model, using b21 elements to model the beams (arms) and coh2d4 cohesive elements to model the adhesive bonding the beams.

DCB - parametric input file

This is a 2D ENF model, created from the WS4 DCB model.

ENF - Edge Notch Flexure, parametric input file

This is a 2D SLS model, created from the WS4 DCB model.
