Welcome to this month's SIMULIA Fluids newsletter. As always, our topics show how simulation is enabling massive transformation for efficiency, sustainability and customer experience in diverse industries including automotive, energy, aerospace and marine.
For the automotive industry, passenger experience can be as important as performance or economy when it comes to differentiation from the competition. We have a special blog post by Thorsten Hans, Comfort & Trim Simulation group leader at Lear Corporation, who explains how CFD is used to optimize passenger thermal comfort with a special focus on seats and the way they 'breathe' to direct heat away from the occupant.
Hydrogen is very useful in applications where electrification is not straightforward as it can be easily produced from low-carbon sources and burns very cleanly. However, at standard temperature and pressure it is a gas with low energy density and storing and transporting it in sufficient quantity requires complex engineering. To learn more, watch our free Tech Talk on modeling and simulation (MODSIM) for the hydrogen industry, explaining how simulation is helping to design safe storage tanks, pipelines and other processing equipment. For other energy sectors, we also have a Tech Talk on rock reservoir character with multiscale, multiphase simulation.
In aerospace, engineers often have to consider flows in the transonic region. Even in subsonic flight, airflows can reach Mach numbers greater than 1 around localized parts of the aircraft. Simulating these accurately can be computationally demanding. In this newsletter, we have a blog post introducing a new hybrid approach to transonic simulation in PowerFLOW that can tackle these challenges efficiently.
Finally, another sustainability transformation is taking place in shipping, with new wind-powered propulsion systems proving themselves in sea trials. Using simulation, engineers can optimize the aerodynamics of sails and find the best configuration for real-world conditions.
