Abstract:

Optimization of the Cooling Pack Performance of a High Range Agricultural Tractor through Techniques of Design of Experiments

Nowadays, the market of off-road vehicles expects a continuous improvement in engine performance while adopting stricter and stricter emission controls. The increased performance comes together with an increment in the heat fluxes through the cooling systems, pushing their design to the physical limits. In tractors, the underhood space is often very tight due to visibility reasons, leaving little room to the cooling system. Additionally, the typical low vehicle speed, high operating temperatures and dirty environment cause extra degradation of cooling performance. This presentation shows a multi-object optimization with PowerFLOW and SIMULIA tools. The study has been performed on the cooling system geometry (fan installation and diameter) to meet SAME DEUTZ-FAHR targets of fan power consumption, efficiency, available shaft power, and also reducing noise.

The study revealed the wide potential for improvement of the starting layout, acting on significative geometric variables; this allows the thermal management to be optimized before prototype testing, and to develop and integrate into the vehicle the best solution for our customer needs in the quickest time possible.

Presenter Biography:

Mauro LOCATELLI, a mechanical engineer from Bergamo, works as an R&D engineer at SAME DEUTZ-FAHR, dealing with 0D, 1D and 3D CFD simulations on components, system and complete machines to improve fuel economy, reliability and performances.

Passionate about maths, music, and the environment, Mauro's studies focused on power production from both fossil and renewable sources, thermodynamics, and fluid dynamics, giving Maurio a chance to appreciate how mathematical language describes real-world physics phenomena.

When finishing his Master's Degree in mechanical engineering, Maurio was awarded "the Best Graduate of the Year" from the Department of Engineering and Applied Physics at the University of Bergamo.

In parallel, musical studies have also been a large share of Mauro's education: in 2019, he graduated with a Master of Arts in Piano Performance. Mauro has enjoyed performing piano recitals, concertos with orchestra and chamber music.
Whenever Maurio has spare time, he's always up for a bike ride in the mountains
