In Abaqus for CATIA V5, if you assign an attribute (load/BC etc) to a geometrical face which has no mesh associated with it then the consistency checker would issue the following error message:

Mesh on support not found.

One or more than one supports selected for Surface Heat Flux-1/Heat Transfer Step-1 has no underlying mesh.

Create or activate the mesh.

In certain cases a suitable geometry might not be available for a mesh part. Groups by neighborhood are useful for creating groups under mesh parts where suitable geometry, from which you would otherwise create a geometrical group, does not exist. For example, you cannot create a face group from a mesh part that was extruded from a surface because there is no geometry extending beyond the original surface. However, you can select faces from the mesh part and create a face group under a mesh part.
