Improved 3DEXPERIENCE Example: Heat Exchanger Efficiency

As part of the R2025x FD02 user assistance, SIMULIA R&D updated a 3DEXPERIENCE example that teaches you how to define and run a simulation that determines the efficiency of a shell-and-tube heat exchanger. In this example, you define a fluid flow simulation using a geometry-based volume definition, and you then model the heat transfer from the hot air in the heat exchanger’s tubes to the cold water surrounding these tubes. To define, run, and evaluate this simulation, you use the following apps:

  • Geometry Idealization Essentials
  • Fluid Scenario Creation
  • Physics Results Explorer

While completing this example, you learn how to create an interior volume for use in the fluid simulation. You then learn how to assign a liquid physics domain to the area through which the water flows. This physics domain is assigned a mass flow inlet boundary condition and a static pressure outlet boundary condition. To learn how to represent the heat from the hot air, you assign a static temperature to the faces of the tubes that the hot air would be flowing through. After running a simulation that predicts the water flow through the shell-and-tube heat exchanger, you review pressure, temperature, and flow velocity. These parameters help you pinpoint areas of the heat exchanger that can be redesigned to optimize heat transfer.

You can use what you learn in this example to leverage geometry-based volume definitions in your own fluid flow simulations that involve heat transfer.
