Abstract

The power of simulation is well-known, however, full benefits of simulation materialize only when the results are highly accurate and predictive. At Google, we focus on building simulation models that are thoroughly verified, calibrated, and validated before we use the analysis results for product design decisions. From time to time, we also perform exploratory and comparative analyses to help steer us in the right direction (especially during the initial stages of product development). Our simulation teams (Structural and thermal design) are involved right from the concept and architectural stages of our hardware products. We strive to simulate often and simulate early (and if at all prefer to fail early in design so we can fix and succeed). We also take a more practical way to create and analyze our simulation models - making use of reduced order solutions and approximations whenever it makes sense to quickly guide us to narrow down design configurations. While we simulate one physics we are also very mindful of the effect/influence of other related physics that can potentially change the solution. We come across unique challenges and often conflicting objective functions in order to achieve an optimal solution - in those instances, we heavily rely on simulation to understand the trade-offs to make informed decisions.
