e-Learning: Creating and Managing FEM Representations and Meshes in the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform

A SIMULIA e-Learning Resource

Created using 3DEXPERIENCE 2014x

In this post, after looking into how to quickly mesh different components in your assembly, we will discuss advanced workflows that are available to create and manage finite element model representations (FEM Rep) in a product assembly in the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform.

Introduction

Two workflows exist in the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform to create and manage finite element model representations:

Meshes of an assembly (MoA)

  • Creates a FEM Rep at the global level by linking the 3D Shape Representations of all individual parts in an assembly.
  • Creates individual mesh parts and associated properties (sections, connections) for every part instance in the assembly.
  • Management of the global FEM Rep becomes cumbersome for fairly complicated assemblies.

Assembly of meshes (AoM)

  • Creates a FEM Rep at the global level by linking the part level FEM Reps of all individual parts in an assembly.
  • When a part is used multiple times in an assembly, the part level FEM Rep is also instantiated along with the part.
  • The part level FEM Rep contains the section properties whereas the global FEM Rep contains the connections for the assembly.
  • Management of part-level FEM Reps might be less efficient for relatively small assemblies.

Depending on your requirements, you can also create and manage FEM Reps by combining both the workflows to your advantage.

Narrated Video

Now, let’s look at a simple example to understand how you can create a FEM Rep by combining both the previously discussed workflows. Assume a connecting rod assembly consisting of 5 unique parts and 8 part instances.

  • Connecting Rod
  • Fork Bolt x 2
  • Nut x 2
  • Washer x 2

In this video, we will create the mesh parts for the connecting rod and the fork in the global FEM Rep using both the MoA and AoM workflows.
