Demonstration of using SIMULIA Abaqus and Isight in carbon composite motorcycle swingarm development | RUM 2022

Abstract

Lightweight design in motorcycle industry is permanent and active topic but contrasts with stiffness requirements of developed structures. Iteration loops are thus required to meet desired targets. In case of carbon composite materials application using automatized iterations is welcome aspect. It saves time costs and offers wider range of possible solutions. Combination of Abaqus as the main solver and Isight for parametric optimization was investigated regarding targeting structure stiffness performance and minimizing mass. Attention was paid to design producibility, stack-up plan, lamination strategy under limiting condition of exchange compatibility with original aluminum alloy part. Evolutionary algorithms were benchmarked and selected for searching optimal stack-up plan considering fibre orientation and lamina thickness. Final results show that using lightweight composite materials and optimization techniques offer up to 25% mass saving potential.
