Abstract:

Simulation with Abaqus of two Hydraulic Cylinders Actuating a Three Point Linkage under Torsional Loads

The three-point hitch is a widely used type of hitch for attaching ploughs and other implements to an agricultural or industrial Tractor. It is made up of several components working together; these include the tractor's hydraulic system (hydraulic cylinders are designed to provide hydraulic power to the linkages), attaching points, the lifting arms, and stabilizers. 

When farming equipment is used, the linkage system is exposed to various loads such as pulling, bending and torsion. These loads cause fatigue and damage to elements in the system. The present study is focused on introducing a new type of Finite Element Modeling of hydraulic cylinders, using Abaqus Fluid Cavity techniques to evaluate the behavior of the 3-point hitch when stressed by off-center loads due to mounted implements (e.g., rotary mowers or ploughs).

The hydraulic cylinders are modeled through a closed volume (associated to a Fluid Cavity) with a specific hydraulic law that links pressure variation to volume variation. This allowed to simulate the realistic pressure in the lift system and to determine the right stresses on the structure due to torsional load, confirmed by a numerical/experimental correlation.


Presenters Biography:

Davide Di Felice's passion for mechanics led him to continue his studies after graduating with his Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of L'Aquila. Davide then moved to Emilia Romagna to obtain his Master's Degree in Vehicle Engineering at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia.

In 2016 Davide began working as an FEA Analyst. From September 2016 to December 2021, he worked at Arbos Tractor SpA, focusing on open-field and specialty tractors.
Subsequently, Davide had a short but intense experience in Bondioli & Pavesi (in the hydraulic sector). He dealt with structural calculations of motors and hydraulic pumps and followed up with a project on noise reduction for hydraulic pumps.

Since September 2021, Davide has worked at CNH Industrial s.p.a. in the tractors section. He now focuses on medium tractor platforms, dealing with and managing structural calculations. In parallel, Davide is the contact person for CFD, Ergonomics, NVH and system modeling activities.
