Clockwork Flip Toy- Modelling and Simulation

Who would have thought the mechanism inside a clockwork flip toy can be so interesting!

Hi all,

Let @NW and @PP present you ‘Clockwork Flip Toy- Modelling and Simulation’ complete workflow created from scratch in 3DEXPERIENCE CATIA and Simpack.

The journey started all the way from seeing my son playing this toy.

‘What causes the toy to flip 360 degrees in the air and land perfectly on the floor?’, a question came to my mind.

The answer to this is below workflow.

Workflow description:

Part A: Feasibility study

  1. All components of toy were identified.
  2. To start with a simple/approximate motion model, these components and connections between them were simplified and reduced to a lesser number.
  3. The simplified components were created and assembled in 3DEXPERIENCE CATIA
  4. After this, model is then opened in Simpack using Powerby connector. Further modelling is developed in Simpack and feasibility study was done.

Part B:  Actual model building

  1. After feasibility study is successful, it’s time to create actual toy model in 3DEXPERIENCE CATIA. This model consists of all parts of toy assembled using correct engineering connections, axes systems, declared mass and inertia properties to each component and suitable colors to each partbody.
  2. Now, as model in 3DEXPERIENCE CATIA is ready, open this model in Simpack using PowerBy connector. Using this PowerBy connector, all products, engineering connections, mass and inertia data, axes systems, colors are automatically transferred in Simpack.
  3. In Simpack, now further modelling is done which includes creation of contact forces, excitations, primitives.
  4. This Simpack model is then solved to get perfect flip.

Please do let us know your feedback on this workflow.

Thank you!
