I have a small lucky cat figure I got when I visited Japan and thought this would be a good way of testing out my Sub-D modeling skills. The model was quite simple, so I kept searching for something similar and then while watching Big Hero 6 I caught a glimpse of "Sushi Chef Cat" and ended up tracking down some of the concept art for it.
I broke the cat down into its respective body parts and started modeling the head. Getting the proportions/positions right were very important as that affected the other parts of the model. Once the cat was complete, I was able to focus on the accessories (nigiri, headband, and knife). The cat then needed a place to sit atop so I modeled a metal frame to hold it up with and included speakers, lighting, and wires. Lastly, I quickly mocked up a roof to showcase the design.
This is where I stopped working on the model but if I were to continue working on this model, I would make an internal frame for the cat as well as covert all the exterior faces to sheet-metal. Some other details would be to add a rotating platform for the cat to spin as well as all the wiring. Maybe for another day. As it stands, I’m really happy with how the cat came out and I’m glad I was able to create a pretty close replica of the model from the movie.
