In this post, I'll present you how to print your own virtual reality headset for smartphone! Thanks to FabLab staff and Pierre-Antoine Arrighi for their precious help !
Step 1: Design your headset. Not comfortable with this idea? In a a hurry? Okay, let's switch to plan B !
Plan B: Find a headset model on the Internet ! I decided to print an open version of the Durovis headset, the OpenDive. Some pics of the models:
Step 2: Print the model! I printed the frame and the accessory separately on the Pirx, a 600 € printer available for a limited time at the FabLab.
Step 3: Enjoy your brand new headset !
Step 4 (to be done): Buy some foam, lens and elastic band to complete your hands-free vr headset !
Commentaries on the printing process:
The Pirx's printing quality is rather good compared to it's relative cheap cost!
Some setups are required to optimize the the printing, such as cover the printing surface with adhesive tape and glue.
Watch carefully after the very first printing layers! On the following pic, we can see how close we were from the failure of the hole printing process because an adhesion lack !
More pics because I took dozen of those ;)
If you haven't done it yet, I hope I made you wanting to take the plunge and use for the first time the FabLab ! It's a very addictive experience ;) !
