Backyard Fun!

As we enter the season of barbecues and backyard fun, @CO and I wanted to make an outdoor game that we could enjoy with family and friends all summer long. We created a 3D Whiteboard and quickly narrowed our list of ideas down to a ring-the-hook game (or is it hook-the-ring?🤔).

We used a mix of xDesign and SOLIDWORKS to refine the design before setting out to build it. As this would be an outdoor game, we chose to build it out of white oak - a species that stands up well to the elements - and protect it with a coat of boiled linseed oil.

We designed custom 3D printed parts to lock the game in the open position as well as to keep score. (click the images below to view the models in 3D)

It was really fun to iterate on the design and prototype as we went. The built-in data management tools that come with SOLIDWORKS for Makers made it really easy to capture different revisions of the design.

We've included the SOLIDWORKS part files (above), their corresponding STLs files (in a zip at the bottom of this post), and this PDF drawing for you to download if you'd like to build one for yourself.
