This is a pressure relief valve on an anesthesia machine to regulate gas flow through the lungs. The flaw in the current machine is sometimes the person operating the system forgets to open the valve once closed. This will cause gas build up in the lungs of the patient who is currently in surgery. The pop-off value safety feature alerts the user if the valve has closed and is not opened after a certain amount of time.
The system was initially designed as a high school capstone project and was developed using soldiworks xDesign, xMechatronics, and manufactured using the 3D printers in the Fablab.
