Factory Flow Simulation – AGV Traffic Management

Objective

The goal of this demonstration is to provide a guide on new AGV capabilities within DELMIA Factory Simulation Engineer role (EFS).

Factory Flow Simulation App provides AGV simulation for warehouse logistics or supplying products on a final assembly line. Autonomous, connected and intelligent, these vehicles help to optimize logistics performance by increasing productivity and reducing operating costs. AGVs are generally battery-powered, driverless vehicles that travel on paths of energized buried wire, chemical trails or maps programmed into vehicle microprocessor memory. The addition of battery constraints to AGVs simulation could increase the number of AGVs required to maintain constant production rate.

Ensuring that we are meeting production goals and quality standards at the lowest possible cost, Factory Flow Simulation App empowers an Industrial Engineer to address design and operational issues, including the following questions:

  • What is the best path layout to minimize travel time?
  • Where are the potential bottleneck areas?
  • How many AGVs do you need to meet activity requirements?
  • What are the best scheduled maintenance strategies?
  • Which task assignment rules maximize vehicle utilization?
  • What is the best idle vehicle deployment to minimize response time?
  • Is there a possibility of deadlocks?
  • Is there a possibility of collisions?
  • What is the best replenishment mode / replenishment check mode for AGV battery management?

Business scenario

Customers want to fine-tune their factory simulation models by including complex AGV traffic management behaviors. The main goal was to ensure that a particular battery charging schemes is feasible and batteries are sized properly so AGVs will be able to accomplish a system’s desired throughput without running out of energy prematurely. The life expectancy of a battery is also studied to make the best choice of battery manufacturer.
