3DEXPERIENCE Live Demo

It starts with the greeting by Gregor Judex and a live demo of the 3DEXPERIENCE. A crankshaft is to be designed - a rather simple example so that the scenario can focus on the process.

As a portfolio manager, Judex sets up the boundary conditions and customer requirements on the platform, which are then forwarded to the requirements manager. The generated from the Customer Requirements System Requirements - sporty acceleration is translated in "0 to 100 km / h in 4 seconds". Now it goes down along the V-model. The system requirements become design requirements, such as geometric data or bearing forces.

The data from the requirements are used to fill out formulas that give the geometric shape of the crankshaft. These margins then optimize the geometry in Simpack. The starting point, in turn, are the bearing forces. Thus, during the design process, it is ensured at all times that the requirements are not lost sight of.

Cloud Based Systems engineering

@FO from Schindler reports on how the company is using the 3DEXPERIENCE. Currently, the average age of elevators worldwide is 20 years - modernization is a mega-topic. In addition, the topic of IoT is important, especially energy efficiency. Each building is unique and places special demands on elevator construction - right up to the building's bending rate in the event of a storm.

Schindler uses a top-down approach to build a logical and functional framework in 3DEXPERIENCE. This can then be adapted to the respective application.

Schindler uses the V model of the RFLP approach to define the elevator model in Systems Engineering. This then results in product and manufacturing data as well as a BIM dataset for the customer.

It continues with the breakout sessions. During the break a group photo was taken of most of the participants! 570!

Some tracks are now deep in the matter, including in the field of electromagnetic waves, EMC, radar and the like. I decided on the - hopefully easier to understand - track "Digital Modeling - From Styling Modeling to Class - A", in which three students from HAW Hamburg will be reporting on the Hamburg Concept Car 2021.

Dassault Systèmes delivers three Class A solutions: the traditional stand-alone product Icem Surf, CATIA Surf for Engineering Design, and the platform app included in 3DEXPERIENCE 2020x. The HAW students used Icem Surf to develop a compact car for the upcoming HAW anniversary. The car is significantly shorter than the S-Class Mercedes and still offers more space inside.


The seat can be adjusted in four positions: Drive Mode, Entertauinment, Office and Relax mode. Large screens provide information while driving and entertainment in autonomous driving. On the basis of a drive from Hamburg to Darmstadr the students show how the interior changes according to requirements - all in ICEM renderings. It is planned to build a concept car with working interior.

I had a nice plan to tell you about different tracks like yesterday, but most of the lecture rooms are fully booked, so I could not find a place to work. Obviously, the number of visitors is even higher today than it was yesterday - with eight parallel sessions.

Room 2.02 is about Generative Design in Context of Requirement, specifically Generative Structural Design for electric aircraft. Bertram Stier from 4RealSim talks about the electric air traffic of the future. Regardless of the drive system, the weight is crucial - lower weight means higher range, higher payload or shorter charging times with electric drive.

One component, which all current concepts have in common, is a relatively thick wing section, which serves partly as a wing, but partly also only as a suspension of the engines. 4RealSim has taken care of the optimal construction of these wing sections. It is important to completely cover the solution space when searching for the optimal structure, in order to find the optimum structure for this highly complex component.

He talks about one of my favorite topics: How do I use computers and users correctly without inhibiting the creativity and experience of the engineer? A clever system based on formulas and parameters - developed by the engineer - makes it possible to quickly get to a series of results, from which an optimal solution can be found.


The tool HyperSizer, coupled with Simulia and Abaqus, allows further optimization, which calculates the respective optimum at each point of the wing. To make the result manufacturable, CATIA is used, where the results of the calculation are translated into tissue cutting plans. At the end, the simplest optimization weighed almost 8 kilograms, the most optimized variant 2.7 kilograms - an excellent value for a component that is less than two meters long.

I'm back in room 2.02, now here is the track "Concept Structure Engineering".

@SM from Dassault Systèmes starts with a live demo of the CATIA module Concept Structure Engineering (CSE). Highly interesting, how to switch seamlessly from one module to the next during the process.

Mertz collects geometries in CSE, at the push of a button on "Calculate" only the caption of the title bar changes to Simulia. Since the 3DEXPERIENCE interface does not require any protruding button bars, otherwise hardly any change is visible. Of course, the tools that are right-clicked will change from app to app. But it never gives the impression of switching to another software.

Here is a report on how this technology is used in body shop construction at BMW. In his dissertation, Gerhard Steber optimized the subframe in the front bodywork area of a BMW.

The goal was to accelerate the speed of subframe development. In addition, of course, a global optimum for the shape of such a framework should be found. At this early stage, the geometry model is not yet very detailed, so the geometry and FE models are virtually identical.

At the beginning of the work was a topology optimization, from which the simulation was then refined.

Track "Advanced Visualization" the description of the 3DEXPERIENCE platform as a visualization pipeline.

Speaker is our CATIA Champion Tomislav Solina from Chinese automaker Byton. He had the great advantage of being able to actually start on the famous green field, so a homogeneous 3DEXPERIENCE platform could be implemented.

The task was to develop a web configurator based on this, which displays the selected configuration on each platform quickly and realistically, to support VR and AR. And this is automated on the basis of the engineering data.


The basis of the visualization is DeltaGen, in which the visualization is prepared, for example, all painted in body color surfaces are grouped together to allow a color change of the car in one step. If something is changed on the car, a new geometry model is found. The software recognizes the areas that have not changed, so only the changed parts need to be redefined.
