Collaborative Design and Experience Tribute

With my colleague @LP we wanted to have fun, and make a dedicated demo for an European event with customers, but also to show how collaborative and powerful our 3DEXPERIENCE Solutions are.

Who Are We

Laura is a Creative Design expert and wanted to demonstrate the capabilities of the new CATIA Creative Design Experience application modeling her own version of the Tron Legacy motorbike.

I’m a Visual and Experience Expert and i wanted to create an experience to mimic a famous scene of the movie, the Light Cycle Arena battle.

Collaborative Workflow

Laura was modeling the motorcycle with Creative Design Experience, starting from the 3D curves, creating subdivision surfaces and enriching the model with modifiers.

I started to create a realtime scene with a 3D model of the arena where i put materials with Product Perception Experience.

Then i created a virtual human with our App Human Design that would play the role of Quorra. I could tune here clothes to have the famous black and emissive costume.

I keep progressing with some standing and driving postures of her, riding the first sketch and 3D surfaces of the motorcycle.

I asked her if she can model the helmet and the ring for the ride mode.

She did it quickly using the new workflows provided by Creative Design Experience and I got her new data automatically updated over the week we had to create this demo.

I created and applied materials to the scene geometries and could check with the embedded Raytracing Stellar render engine the global appearance of the motorcycle and the scene. In parallel, Laura kept working on the model itself, changing the shapes and adding details. I retrieved her current model at each update without impacting the experience.

Then i created a new player to fight with Quorra, welcoming CLU in the experience. Set his orange costume, his motorbike materials and positions in the arena. Now CLU can overtake Quorra to win the race and stole her battle ring.

Each variants can be controlled by a keyboard touch as a trigger, or by selecting a geometry in the scene.

How 3DEXPERIENCE Get Us Efficient and On Time

On my side, I only had to focus on the final staging of my experience by creating variants of cameras, and Quorra postures : whenever the model changed, everything was updated without needing to import new data or re-apply material.

For Laura, it meant more time for design iterations : she didn’t had to stop earlier her modeling, because of deadline i may had with solutions where you have to import, convert and prep data.

3DEXPERIENCE perfectly connected our two domains in a collaborative way, progressing at the same time on our jobs, and avoiding the latency waiting time to get data from each other.

Demo Result on Screen

With its ergonomic and effective interface we can select Product Perception Experience’s variants thumbnails and see in realtime the results. With a touchscreen the interaction is much more powerful. I can also turn on the Stellar Raytracing engine at any time.

I rendered directly from the Product Perception Experience realtime experience some images and videos in Raytracing that would mimic the battle scene.

I have connected my computer to our HPC clustering system called Distributed Stellar, and get quickly the render outputs within few hours.

Demo Day at the Event

During the Demo day, we have shown Creative Design Experience in VR to sketch within an HMD, to shape and sculpt the motorcycle body and fine tune it.

We also proposed to experience in VR the motorcycle battle in the headset, by triggering the variants via the HMD controllers, and selecting the geometries set as trigger.

As a Take Away

Within a week we get a model, an experience, videos to communicate, and VR experiences with customers.

This was full of fun for us, and with no limitations we demonstrated how integrated, collaborative and easy to use our solutions are.

So what about this workflow in your companies and organizations?
