Pantograph Mechanism

Pantograph mechanism is a type of mechanical linkage that is commonly used to maintain the parallelism of two or more objects in motion. It consists of a series of rigid links that are connected by movable joints to create a geometric structure that is capable of maintaining its shape while undergoing linear or rotational motion. Pantograph mechanism is used to create complex geometries for various engineering applications.

Designing a Pantograph Mechanism in 3D Experience Software:

To design a pantograph mechanism in 3D Experience software, the user needs to follow the following steps:

  1. Create a new design file in 3DEXPERIENCE software.
  2. Select the part design from my apps by clicking on 3D compass and design the required links.
  3. Define the length and width of the pantograph mechanism by inputting the dimensions in the design menu.
  4. Choose the number of links and joints in the mechanism and define their positions using the 3D sketch tool.
  5. Add the necessary constraints to ensure that the mechanism maintains its parallelism during motion.
  6. Test the mechanism by simulating its motion using the simulation tool.

Applications of Pantograph Mechanism:

Pantograph mechanisms have a wide range of applications in engineering, including:

  • Parallel linkages: Pantograph mechanisms are commonly used in parallel linkages to maintain the parallelism of two or more objects in motion. They are used in various machines such as presses, cutting machines, and robots.
  • Electric buses/ trains: Pantograph mechanisms are used in electric buses (in foreign countries) to maintain the parallelism of the two sections of the bus during motion.
  • Drawing machines: Pantograph mechanisms are used in drawing machines to maintain the parallelism of the pen and the paper during motion.
  • Automotive industry: Pantograph mechanisms are used in the automotive industry in the suspension systems of vehicles to maintain the parallelism of the wheels during motion.

Conclusion:

The pantograph mechanism is a versatile mechanical linkage that is widely used in various engineering applications. With the 3D Experience software, designing and simulating pantograph mechanisms has become easier and more efficient. Its application in various industries has made it an important tool for engineers and designers.
