MODSIM OF A RUGBY FOOTBALL IN SOLIDWORKS

🔧 SolidWorks Flow Simulation | Rotating Rugby Ball Aerodynamics 🏉💨

As part of my ongoing exploration into sports aerodynamics and fluid mechanics, I recently completed a CFD simulation of a rugby football using SolidWorks Flow Simulation.

Project Objective:
To visualize and analyze the airflow behavior around a spinning rugby ball under game-like conditions.

Key Simulation Parameters:

  • Ball Rotation Speed: 7 RPM
  • Inlet Air Velocity: 20 m/s (representing wind or forward motion)
  • Boundary Condition: Rotating region around the rugby ball
  • Results: Flow Trajectory & Cut Plot (showing velocity distribution and wake behavior)

🌀 The rotating boundary condition allowed the simulation to replicate the Magnus effect, which is vital in understanding the curved trajectory and stability of the rugby ball in flight. The visual outputs clearly show how rotation influences wake formation and pressure distribution across the ball’s surface.

This study reinforces the importance of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in sports equipment design and performance analysis, providing both visual insight and quantitative data.

I’m always looking to expand my knowledge in aerodynamics, simulation techniques, and engineering design—particularly in contexts where physics meets performance.
