Mechanism Monday: A Four Bar Chain Catapult

What will you get, when you mix Kinematics and Projectile Motion?

A Four Bar Chain Catapult.

The Four Bar Chain Mechanism used in this mechanism is similar to one of its equivalent inversion, also known as Quick Return Mechanism. But instead of quick return, it is used for quick advance, to hit the bulls eye🎯.

Glossary:

Kinematics: Kinematics describes the motion of points, bodies, and systems of bodies without considering the forces that cause them to move.

Projectile Motion: A form of motion experienced by an object that moves along a curved path under the action of gravity only.

Four Bar Chain Mechanism: It consists of four bodies, called bars or links, connected in a loop by four joints. It is the simplest closed-chain movable linkage.

Equivalent Mechanism: Turning pairs of plane mechanisms may be replaced by other types of pairs such as sliding pairs or cam pairs. The new mechanism obtained having the same number of degrees of freedom as the original mechanism is called the equivalent mechanism.

Inversion of a Mechanism: Inversion of mechanism refers to the process of fixing the links of a kinematic chain one at a time in order to obtain alternative mechanisms.

Quick Return Mechanism: A quick return mechanism is an apparatus to produce a reciprocating motion in which the time taken for travel in return stroke is less than in the forward stroke. It is driven by a circular motion source.
