Do you know about Elliptical Trammel? Here are some insights and the mechanism created by me and my team, that can surely help you for better understanding.
Elliptical Trammel :
The Elliptical Trammel (also known as the Elliptic Trammel, or the Trammel of Archimedes) is a simple mechanism which can trace an exact elliptical path. Figure 1 shows the geometry of this mechanism, which consists of two prismatic (or sliding) joints and two revolute (or rotational) joints. These joints guide the movement of a central rigid body.
Elliptical trammel is an inversion of double slider crank chain mechanism. A double slider crank chain consist of four links forming two sliding pair and two turning pairs hence called as RRPP mechanism.
Links :

Pairs :
Pair A – sliding pair , link 1 and link 4
Pair B – turning pair , link 1 and link 2
Pair C – turning pair , link 2 and link 3
Pair D – sliding pair , link 3 and link 4
Application :
- It is use as automatic tool changer mechanism.
- Elliptical trammel are used for drawing ellipse.
They can be used to draw smaller ellipse but only draw on half at a time, having to be reverse to draw the complete ellipse.
With 3DEXPERIENCE software designing and simulating the mechanism has become simpler and more efficient. We used Sketcher app for creating 2D sketch and Part Design for designing part as well as CATIA Assembly design for assembly design. Mechanical Systems Design and Mechanical Systems Experience collectively used for kinematic simulation purpose.
We thank our guides and student community leaders for providing us with opportunity to work on this mechanism and handle 3DExperience software.
