CATIA V5 to 3DEXPERIENCE Material Import [Series- Getting Started with Materials | Part-5]

This post contains information about importing CATIA V5 Material data into the 3DEXPERIENCE platform.

The following table describes import from CATIA V5 file-based data to 3DEXPERIENCE content. The Import Results column describes whether content is fully imported, partially imported, or not imported.

Format-

A CATIA V5- CATMaterial document has no equivalent in the 3DEXPERIENCE platform, but its content is imported as shown below-

Preferences- Material Optimization

When there are already materials existing in the 3DEXPERIENCE platform database that are similar to the CATIA V5 materials being imported, certain functions can be used to avoid duplication by checking existing materials from the 3DEXPERIENCE database and comparing them with the materials being imported.

Material optimization options enable you to customize FBDI-related aspects of material data import. This optimization ensures a maximal reuse of existing materials from within the current session's database.

To specify these options, select Me > Preferences > Common Preferences > Exchange Management > Import > Material tab.

Similarity Function

Full

Imports material data using the full similarity function which tests the similarity of materials by checking both material names and domain attribute values. (By default, this check box is selected.)

Name

Imports material data using a similarity function that tests the similarity of materials by checking material names only.

When mapping tables are not used

Select- Activate optimization

FBDI performs optimization of the newly imported material data, which helps ensure that data is not duplicated if a previously imported material is similar to one that you want to import.

Import Exceptions or Limitations

  • The material name in the 3DEXPERIENCE platform is specified by the name in V5.
  • In V5, a material domain is not automatically created with a material. If necessary, a domain is added after the material is created.
Migrating a material without a domain from V5 to the 3DEXPERIENCE platform creates a material without any associated domains.
  • Only expressed applied materials are imported. Expressed applied materials are those taken into account by the priority rules and inheritance settings specified in V5.

Caution-

  • Import Mode- Do not simultaneously use the Name and Full similarity functions.

Use the same mode for all your imports.

For example, if you import a part with applied materials in the Full mode and then import the same part in the Name mode, the system may not recognize the previously imported materials and create duplicates.

  • If you select Optimization > Similarity function > Full, only the materials with a Basic, Custom or 3D Material rendering domain are supported. The materials with another rendering domain type are duplicated.
