Snorkeling masks to protect doctors

Proud to share our contribution in the hard fight against Covid-19. All together supporting who’s helping us!

WHY : “Collaboration with Marco Bortolotti, Head of the Company Information Service of the Sassuolo Hospital was fundamental, who not only contacted us but acted as an intermediary to help us understand the needs of the operators. And it was precisely from this comparison that it emerged that the most critical issue these days is the lack of safety devices for doctors and nurses. We therefore tried to solve the problem by transforming these devices into protective devices.

The joint activities of Solid Energy with the hospital in Sassuolo (MO) and now extended to other centers in the region. Useful not only for patients on subintensive care, but also to give doctors greater protection. Designed with components available on the market, so as to be made more easily. Potential for 500 pieces per day throughout Italy thanks to the THE3DGROUP network. Roberto Rizzo, who leads the Group from the headquarters in Treviso: "I have given the Veneto Region full availability, we hope to be of help here too soon."

WHAT : The same Decathlon mask was then connected, via a 3D printed connector, to two filters that are regularly found on the market. In this way, the mask perfectly covers the areas of the face most at risk of contagion, mouth, nose and eyes, and allows you to breathe safely while continuing your activity. The prototypes that have been created are the result of the special collaboration with the Sassuolo Hospital and with various specialized centers. A pool of professionals who, through skills, knowledge and an out-of-the-box thought, have managed to create a fast construction solution that responds effectively to today's needs starting from a simple snorkeling mask.

To create a filter mask for prolonged use, it is essential to ensure correct air flow. The filtering of pathogens must be carried out both at the entrance and at the exit to counter the contagion.

The fitting design involves the use of two suction filters using the mask's face valves inside the fitting as a non-return system.

The aim was to increase the life of the filters by eliminating the water vapor emitted during exhalation through the valves. The carried moisture of the exhalation wets the filtering surface deteriorating the filter in less time.

The Easy Breath from Decathlon mask used as a protective device seems to be safe because it can be completely sanitized, as well as the fitting. Air filters are readily available on the market and remain effective for over a month.

During the design done with Solidworks, of the two types of fitting, particular importance was given to the optimization for additive manufacturing of the FDM type, with attention to saving time and avoiding, as far as possible, the use of support material, allowing to significantly increase the production in case of need.

The filters we used are Honeywell Twin A2P3 Filters, Model number N06575001A2P3

HOW :

For doctors or healthcare professionals, in order to guarantee certain standards, the requirement is a professional printer that can use material from the certified supply chain.

*** IMPORTANT *** To avoid the accumulation of carbon dioxide inside the mask and to maximize the life of the filters, keeping them dry from the humidity of the breath, it is strongly recommended to move the valves that are inside the EasyBreath mask as per instructions

Medical Feedbacks

We are available to all hospitals that need protective devices or to adapt the devices to their machinery (not all hospitals have the same machines). All the design work is and will be completely free, as well as the materials for printing the fittings made available free of charge to hospitals, nursing homes, retirement homes and to the Civil Protection, as confirmed by the President of Energy Group Lucio Ferranti.
