Session Abstract

The Bowhead ERA is a carbon composite wheelchair redefining mobility with a focus on design and safety. Unlike traditional designs that have changed little in decades, the ERA integrates aesthetics, ergonomics, and safety while addressing critical challenges that wheelchair users face. A key innovation is its calf rest system, which protects users from lower limb spasticity injuries through padded supports and adjustable mounts. To reduce weight, cost, and lead time, CNC-machined aluminum parts are being replaced with injection-molded components featuring overmolded inserts. Dassault Systèmes 3DEXPERIENCE Plastic Injection Engineer software predicts and eliminates molding defects early in development. This MODSIM approach minimizes iterations, shortens time-to-market, and ensures reliable parts. Attendees will learn how simulation accelerates innovation in mobility devices, reduces manufacturing risks, and shows how MODSIM can transform user-focused design.
