1240 - Creating Custom Designs in SOLIDWORKS Based on Imported Geometry

This session dives into unique workflows for modifying and customizing designs in SOLIDWORKS based on imported geometry. This is a common scenario where a user discovers a design on a website that they’d like to use, (such as GrabCAD); however, the files don’t include native SOLIDWORKS geometry. To use this design, the imported geometry is used as a foundation for new features and geometry to be built. This workflow is great for anyone using SOLIDWORKS to convey concepts without building a design from the ground up.

This process begins by copying a surface from the imported part, (in this case a racing seat), removing unnecessary holes, and then extending the surface to provide a larger modifiable area. The Freeform command can then be used to customize the seat contour, from here a new seat shape can be created.

If you’re an intermediate to advanced SOLIDWORKS user that’s looking to increase your use of Surfacing tools and customize imported designs, this session is absolutely for you!
