Packaging is often the first interaction consumers have with a product. It influences consumer decisions, brand perception, and product usability. Good packaging is aesthetically pleasing, safe, sturdy, reliable, user-friendly, and able to withstand the rigors of the supply chain. When designing the packaging, the engineers are tasked to reduce the material and weight, and also optimize the operational performance. Engineers must complete these tasks within a short development cycle so that the organization can quickly innovate in response to consumer demands.

In this best practice document, we will study the design and simulation team at a packaging manufacturing company. This team is in charge of designing and analyzing a new water bottle for a major consumer packaged goods manufacturer. The packaging manufacturing company designs and manufactures a broad spectrum of packaging solutions.

The design and simulation team at the manufacturer consists of Design Engineers, Simulation Analysts, and Methods Developers. The Design Engineer designs the new water bottle. The Simulation Analyst builds structural and fluid flow simulations to calculate key performance indicators. While working on this project, the team sees value in automating the simulation-based design exploration to conduct what-if scenarios. The Methods Developer then works with the Simulation Analyst and the Design engineer to build a Simulation Process that automates this design exploration. The Methods Developer converts this Simulation Process into a Simulation Template to capture best practices and to create a custom and easy-to-use interface for the design exploration. The Simulation Analyst consumes this Simulation Template to create, configure and execute new Simulation Processes for design exploration.
