SIMULIA Simpack is a Multibody Simulation (MBS) software for dynamic analysis of mechanical systems. A simplified approach to modelling mechanical systems is to assume the components to be rigid bodies. The assumption that bodies are infinitely stiff enables quicker solution to the equation of motion as the number of Degrees of Freedom (DOF) or the number of unknowns in the model are reduced. Multibody Simulation allows an analyst to study the kinematic behavior of a system or to identify forces acting between two components at a much lower computational cost than a Finite Element Analysis. In the initial stages of product development faster analysis of the mechanical systems is more beneficial than slower detailed Finite Element Analysis.
There are several applications where most of the system can be assumed rigid but elastic behavior of some components is still critical for the dynamic analysis. It is possible to model such systems in finite element programs but the solution becomes prohibitively expensive for typical systems with millions of degrees of freedom as there are numerical challenges in solving large rotations and translations. Flexible Multibody Simulation is an elegant alternative approach that combines the benefits of the traditional MBS approach with the high fidelity provided by the Finite Element method.
