Shell of solid body (made from surfaces) fails

Hi, I have a helmet I modeled from surfaces. I used a surface-fill to close it and then a deleteFace to make the object a solid. This made the shell command possible to click but it fails. Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated, I'm open to other solutions, I just want the helmet to be hollow but with the walls having some thickness.
