I have problem with 'select other'.

The video Deepak sent me showed that he can move mouse around the object and the pick the face/edge, but it didn't work for me. I had to choose from the little window for the features I wanted. It's not crucial but inconvenient. Is there a setting I need to configure to get that work for me?
