I was modelling a part yesterday like this one:

and trying to do pretty much what is on the video - apply a shellto localised areas. Could I figure out how to do this inSolidWorks? No. Now that video is for NX6 and note that you canpreselect an area and apply a shell feature to that area (the factthat is synchronous technology stuff is not relevant - its theshell functionality I find interesting). When I used ThinkDesignback in the early 2000s you could do that as well using that (infact you could do a lot more as the same preselection applied toother features as well like ribs).
NX is parasolid so the kernel must allow that kind offunctionality. Solidworks should have this as well. Anytakers?SolidworksParts And Features
