How to fill a volume efficiently?

I'm just throwing this post up here to see if others have any different modeling ideas on how to accomplish what I need.

In our units we have a layer of insulation between the inside and outside of the unit.  Now, this insulation is not made-to-fit but stuffed in crevices and held down by pins/studs.  So we have no need for a drawing of the insulation we just need something to fill the volume and look pretty when doing section views.  The problem comes in because we have a lot of different pipes/tubes/headers/etc passing through this insulation layer.  My first attempts were fairly lightweight but very cumbersome (read: sketch-cut extrudes every time something passed through this layer).  This next attempt, which is attached, is great; it's automated and dynamic.  The only downside is the obvious overhead it adds to the assembly (35 secs for the cavity feature in the part).

Anybody have ideas on how to accomplish what amounts to a dynamic volume fill with lower overhead?

Thanks!
