How do I select only what I see?

Let’s say I have a single part.  This part looks like a fine tooth comb behind a wall.  I bring this part into an assembly and want to mate the face of the wall with something else.  Unfortunately, all I can do is select the teeth of that comb behind the wall.

My example isn’t quite like this, but I’m trying to select a face, and all I’m getting is the edges, points, lines etc. that are behind the face I want.  I always keep “Shaded with edges” with no transparency selected, so if I click anywhere on the face I want, all I should get it that face, not anything behind it.

On some of my “comb” like parts, it takes me 10-15 clicks to get the face that I want.  How do I avoid this?
