Flummoxed by appearances.

I often use SW to generate VRML files for 3d printing of multicolored
parts via ZCorp machines.
As I understand it, when SW creates a VRML file only the color & shape
data transfer, not any textures, lighting, materials, etc.
Creating VRML's was easy in SW07 because there weren't that many
options.
But now, in my '09 version, I don't understand the Appearances/Scenes
option.  I'd just like to see a matte surface with the basic color.  I
don't want default plastic, or any material options, because that just
confuses what I'll see visually once I make the 3d print.
Perhaps the problem is that I have Photoworks installed, & that wasn't
the case with my 2007 installation.  Can I / should I just uninstall
Photoworks?
Any help appreciated.
