We have appearances applied to individual parts, but we need to add cuts to them at the assembly level, and we'd like to change the appearance of the cut faces in the assembly so that they are easily distinguishable from the original (uncut) parts.

I tried applying the new appearance to the face created by the cut feature, and also to the feature itself, but it won't take.  It's easy to apply a different appearance to an individual face within a part, but when the face is created by a cut feature applied at the assembly level, it doesn't want to play ball with me.

Is this possible?  Hopefully someone has a trick to make this happen - my experience with appearances is limited at best.
