I am new to solidworks and its APIs and was hoping someone could give me a little direction and best practice information.

I need to generate images of solidworks models to display in another application. I also need the ability to set values for the part before it is rendered, things like size (height/width/length) and materials.

For generating an image it looks like eDrawings has some functionality that I might be able to leverage in a custom application but I am not finding a good mechanism to set values outside of a solidworks add-in. I would like a solution that does not require the user to have the main solidworks app running.

Is there an API for modifying solidworks parts externally?

Are there other options besides the eDrawings API's for generating images of models?
