Assembly Configurations

I have a question about configurations, whether this is what I should be using to do what I want and, if so, how to do it.

One of the products we manufacture are deli slider doors. Much like slider windows in a frame that gets inserted into an opening.

One style is self-closing, so has a complex header with numerous parts attached to help facilitate self-closing.

We also make a manual closing deli slider that has a different header (simplified) and, of course, doesn’t use some of the parts associated with the self-closing slider header.

I thought that if I created a derived configuration from the self-closing frame assembly that I could remove the unneeded parts and replace the header and then select the desired configuration in the drawings to reflect self-closing or manual sliders.

I tried this by making a configuartion and changing it but it didn’t do that, it changed the original too. Earlier I had been successful creating different display states configurations.

Am I misunderstanding what configurations are used for? If so, what is the best way to approach what I discuss above? Should I pack and go (or save as) the frame assembly to a new name in the same general folder and change out the parts I need to?

Any insight would be very welcome.

I did do a forum search but didn't find something that addressed this in a manner I could grasp.
