Simulating a half sine impulse shock load on model with bolt preload

Hi Folks,

I have used Modal Transient to analyse a shock impulse of duration 10ms. However, I have discovered that Modal Transient is a linear perturbation procedure and so the results will only be changes in load magnitude about the base state. The base state is a static analysis with pretension applied to 2 bolts.This is not what I want. 

I would like the final result to include the bolt preload magnitude plus the additional perturbation load due to impulse. Its not clear how I can do this in abaqus. Is perhaps the explicit solver the only way to go?

Any suggestions will be welcomed.
