Material Model for Wood

I am currently developing an Abaqus/Explicit model to simulate push-out tests of a steel–timber (CLT) connection. However, I have reached some limitations in modeling the timber behavior. At the moment, I am using the Hill yield criterion (defined via Plastic → Potential) to describe the plastic behavior of wood. Since this criterion does not distinguish between tension and compression, it leads to a significant overestimation of the load-carrying capacity compared to the experimental results.

Therefore, I am looking for a more suitable material model. I came across the Hoffman criterion and the Sandhaas model, but both seem to require implementation through a VUMAT subroutine, which is beyond the time scope of my master’s thesis.

Does anyone know of alternative approaches or existing built-in material models in Abaqus that can reasonably capture the complex behavior of wood without writing a user subroutine?

Kind regards.
