Hi, I’m modeling a lattice structure in Abaqus under base excitation, where damping mainly comes from geometric nonlinearity and buckling—not material properties.
I tried estimating damping from hysteresis in large deformation tests, then applying it as global/modal damping. But without explicitly defining a damping ratio, the dynamic solver doesn’t show the same damping response.
Is there a way in Abaqus to capture damping effects due to geometric nonlinearity alone, without specifying a damping ratio? Or is it always necessary to define damping explicitly, even if it’s not material-based?
Thanks for any advice or references.
