Damage Initiation in Ductile Metals: MAXPS vs. Ductile Criterion

Hi, In my study I modeled an aluminum alloy lattice structure using B21 beam elements. The paper I am replicating states that “failure initiation starts when the maximum axial strain reaches about 0.03.”

  • Abaqus offers both Ductile criterion (plastic strain-based, suited for metals) and MAXPS criterion (maximum principal strain, often linked to brittle fracture).
  • I achieved closer agreement with experiments using MAXPS.

👉 Is it acceptable to use *DAMAGE INITIATION, CRITERION=MAXPS for a ductile metal lattice when the experimental definition of failure is strain-based, or should the Ductile criterion always be preferred for metals?

Thanks.
