I posted this before but trying to make my question more clear.

If my assembly has a beam and a shell. As shown in Picture 1. A contact constraint needs to be defined between the beam and the shell. If the shell's plane is considered the mid-plane, the nodal offset of the shell needs to be taken into consideration, so the beam is translated by a distance representing the location of the surface of the shell. 

For the beam, is it the same case as well? If I render the profile as in picture 2, there is interpenetration with the shell. Should the node of the beam be translated as well corresponding to the thickness of the beam before contact is defined?
