3D, soft solids, excessive distortion

Hi,

 

 

I have great difficulties in modelling three dimensional soft solids in sliding contact with a rigid body. The simulation breaks down very early as soon as bodies come into contact because of excessive distortion and the contact surfaces look 'wrinkled' although there are many nodes in contact with a smooth curved surface.

To me this behaviour indicates too high accelerations of the nodes due to contact conditions. I am using Abaqus explicit.

I would like to ask if somebody has an opinion on the following:

  • More or less suitable element types
  • contact conditions such as hard or soft normal contact / elastic slip in tangential direction
  • Increasing of damping using bulk viscosity or material properties.
