In a drawing previously drawn in AutoCAD these dimesnions remain a full entity.  When I make adjustments to the drawing with new dimenions (or at anytime I place a dimension for that matter), they automatically explode into seperate entities.  Doesn't matter what drawing file version it is (R2010, R2004, R14, etc.).
